Liverpool begin the new season with the fixture they ended the last one with, and they won’t want a repeat of that performance and scoreline.

Just 11 weeks ago, in captain Steven Gerrard’s final Premier League game, Brendan Rodgers’ side were thrashed 6-1 by their opponents Stoke, their worst ever defeat since the competition began in 1992.

Once again, there has been a lot of changes to the playing staff at Anfield over the summer, and Christian Benteke, Nathaniel Clyne and Roberto Firmino could all make their debuts, while their summer signing from Charlton, Joe Gomez, could also start after impressing at left-back during pre-season.

However, Daniel Sturridge, Joe Allen and Jon Flanagan are all still missing.

The hosts, who are looking to secure a third successive top-half finish and even potentially reach for European football, were dealt a huge blow with the news that their skipper, Ryan Shawcross, will be out for around two months to treat a back problem.

The fixture at the Britannia could also come too soon for Bojan, who is recovering cruciate knee ligament injury suffered in January, while Marko Arnautovic and Marc Wilson are also doubts.
