Rangers: Which out-of-contract players should get a new deal?

As the calendar ticked over from 2015 into 2016, a number of Rangers players saw themselves become eligible to talk with potential suitors over a move in the summer.

Cammy Bell, Nicky Clark, David Templeton and Nicky Law will all be free agents at the end of the season and, while it looks like the injury-hit Ibrox careers of Bell and Templeton are coming to an end, there is a chance that Mark Warburton may see fit to offer Law, and maybe Clark, an extension.

Despite the signing of a whole new midfield over the summer, Law has worked his way back into regular contention at the expense of Arsenal loanee Gedion Zelalem. The ex-Motherwell star has put in some excellent performances recently and is back in the side on merit.

Rangers are hopeful of completing a deal for Brentford midfielder Toumani Diagouraga this month.

The expected arrival of Brentford’s Toumani Diagouraga before the close of the transfer window on February 1 may see game time in the second half of the season harder to come by with Jason Holt and Andy Halliday both performing fantastically so far this season, meaning Clark may find a new contract harder to come by.

The signing of Harry Forrester until the end of the season and the much-rumoured signing of St. Johnstone’s Michael O’Halloran will see the former Queen of the South man find it hard to make an impact. Josh Windass’ arrival in the summer will only likely push Clark further down the pecking order.

Clark himself will probably realise his time is coming to an end. You can’t fault his effort or application; he’s busts a gut every time he gets an opportunity, but he’s just isn’t good enough for Rangers going forward, hopefully, into a Premiership title challenge.

Cammy Bell has been almost invisible since the play-off defeat to Motherwell and with Wes Foderingham and new recruit Maciej Gostomski available, it’s difficult to see Bell regain the number one jersey. Injuries and a loss of form has seen Bell feature in a limited number of games over the last 12 months and it may be best for all to part ways soon.

And that leaves one more – David Templeton. The tricky winger has all the attributes to terrorise defences however, just like at Hearts, he hasn’t amounted to much more than a bit-part player in his four years at Ibrox. His spell in Govan reminds me of another former Jambo who moved to Rangers – Andy Webster.
