Then at Blackburn, Alan Shearer was highlighted as the pick of the Premier League's forwards by Liverpool defender John Scales – now a columnist for Shoot.
Scalesy wasn't wrong, as usual, as Shearer went on to notch a record 34 goals as he led Blackburn to the title, securing the PFA Players' Player of the Year award too. Within two years he became the most expensive player in the world, joining boyhood club Newcastle for £15m in 1996.
