Southampton are understood to be closing in on the signing of QPR striker Charlie Austin, according to Shoot Sources.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman had previously stated that the only potential arrival at St Mary’s during the January transfer window would be a striker, and the Dutchman is said to be closing in on a deal for the prolific forward.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at Loftus Road in the summer, and looked as though he would stay until the summer and then leave for free, but the South Coast outfit have now made their move.

Austin has scored 48 goals in 89 appearances in all competitions for the Championship outfit, following a move from Burnley in the summer of 2013.
