At the final whistle at St Mary’s on Sunday following Southampton’s defeat to Stoke City, boos could clearly be heard by many of the home fans.

Many fans of other clubs may wonder why the Saints boss is so unpopular, after all the club did finish eighth in the table and make it all the way to Wembley for the EFL Cup final.

The table perhaps doesn’t tell the full story as while eighth place is a very good showing for Southampton it’s worth noting there’s only been a six point difference between eighth and seventeenth this season, it’s been that tight in the Premier League that back to back wins can make decide whether it’s a bad season or a great one for many clubs.

With many fans fed up with Puel who reportedly lost the dressing room months ago, attention has already turned to who could be his successor, with Marco Silva the favourite to take over.

Considering Hull City lost 7-1 to Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the season and were relegated before the game had even kicked off it does seem odd that Silva is so highly thought of while Puel struggles to convince.

Here’s how Southampton fans reacted to their manager’s season:

The manager we wan’t out lost 0-1

The manager most want in lost 1-7

I want Puel gone but surely Silva isn’t the man…. #SaintsFC

@PushAndPuel @saints_fc_south Not convinced on Silva either. Need a big name like Mancini if we want to attract players and push on

@PushAndPuel Would like to see a statement from the club and see them go for someone really good. They have the money.

Even losing 1-0 to stoke at home can’t make Puel play two up front. He has to go#saintsfc

I think Puel may escape the chop. Despite few goals his achievements could be seen as a success. No goals in 17/18 then
sacked by Dec?
