Southampton face Manchester United at Wembley Stadium in the 2017 EFL Cup final – the competition’s 57th final showdown.

The Saints, who are definitely without long-term absentees Charlie Austin, Virgil van Dijk, Jeremy Pied, Matt Targett and Alex McCarthy for this afternoon’s showdown, are looking to become the 24th different football club to win the competition, after losing their previous [and only] League Cup final against Nottingham Forest back in 1979.

However, Southampton did defeat The Red Devils back in the 1976 FA Cup final to claim their only major trophy to date.

This is Saints’ first appearance at Wembley since winning the Football League Trophy back in March 2010 against Carlisle United.

Claude Puel’s men are just the second side in League Cup history to reach the final without conceding a goal.

If they were to keep a clean sheet today against United, they would become the first team to play in every round without conceding.
