Sunderland have appointed David Moyes as their new manager on a four-year deal, with the Scot replacing Sam Allardyce, who was announced as the new England boss on Friday.

The former Manchester United and Everton manager has been out of work since he was sacked by Spanish side Real Sociedad in November, and makes his first return to the Premier League since being let go by the Red Devils after just 10 months in charge in April 2014.

On his arrival at the Stadium of Light, Moyes said: “I have taken over a big British club, with a great support, and I’m looking forward to working in the Premier League again.”

The 53-year-old, who began his coaching career with Preston North End, won the LMA Manager of the Year award three times during his spell at Goodison Park, where he took charge of 513 matches over an 11-year period, before he was named as Sir Ale Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford.
