West Ham United have confirmed that defender Aaron Cresswell has been ruled out for up to four months with a knee ligament injury.

The Premier League club, who visit Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their 2016/17 English top-flight campaign opener on August 15, suffered the blow following the left-back’s collision in Saturday’s 3-0 pre-season win over German club Karlsruher.

The 26-year-old scored two goals and provided four assists in 47 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers last season under manager Slaven Bilic.

The full-back, who has missed just one Premier League outing throughout the past two campaigns, went down following a heavy challenge from opposing midfielder Grischa Promel and immediately signalled to the bench that he was unable to continue.

Cresswell, who joined the Londoners back in July 2014 following his £3.75m switch from Championship outfit Ipswich Town, is now expected to see a specialist “early next week” where a decision will be taken on whether surgery would be required.
