Kirland, who earned his only international cap against Greece back in 2006, played just seven games in all competitions for Sheffield Wednesday last season before turning down a contract extension at the club.

The experienced shot-stopper could make his Latics debut this Saturday against another of his former clubs Coventry City on the opening day of the new 2015-16 season.

Despite Wigan boss Gary Caldwell already signing Walsall goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell this summer, the former FA Cup winners have also lost fellow shot-stoppers Ali Al-Habsi and Scott Carson to Reading and Derby County respectively.
