Arsenal’s gleaming hope

Just two games into the Premier League season and already there have been some pretty sixy scores.

Winning 6-0 appears to be the trend this season. Long may it continue! Chelsea have managed the score twice; and Newcastle have also got in on the act.

Those two hit the headlines for their amazing victories but there was a less muted reaction to Arsenal thrashing Blackpool 6-0. There it was all about Theo Walcott’s hat-trick.

Does that tell you anything? It probably doesn’t mean a lot at this early stage to be honest, but Arsenal don’t score a load of goals that often.

Arsene Wenger has quietly and sensibly gone about his transfer business this summer adding what appear to be quality players to an already very talented squad.

I won’t insult your football intelligence by going through a list of the Gunners established top-flight stats.

But I will draw your attention to the fact that he has a clutch of incredible youngsters – and not all from France – that Wenger has nestling on the edge on his first XI.

I know its only promise and the goods have yet to be delivered, but the Frenchman’s reserve side is literally bursting at the seams with players who could be the new Fabregas, Walcott, Nasri etc…

We won’t know the manager’s final 25-man squad until next week but his selections are going to be interesting.

And, whisper this quietly, but whilst everyone is talking about Man City challenging, Man United coming back and Chelsea retaining the title… anyone fancy Arsenal as a very good outside bet?

Or at the very least a cup to end their silverware drought.
