Peter Crouch or Carlton Cole? Does James Milner go? Will Joe Cole be fit enough?
They are just a few of the questions already being asked about England’s World Cup squad. And over the next few months the debate is bound to rage even more fiercely.
The goalkeeping spot appears a straight choice of David James, Rob Green or Ben Foster. It’s hard to see anyone gate-crashing that party.
The defence – with the exception of John Terry and Ashley Cole – could be changed slightly. But it’s not very likely. Rio Ferdinand and Glen Johnson look good bets to keep their places.
Midfield is a bit crowded. Steven Gerrard has to be there but I reckon that all of the other spots are still potentially up for grabs, although David Beckham and Frank Lampard are virtual certainties. Gareth Barry should be. Michael Carrick is quality but I think he still needs to totally convince Capello.
I think James Milner’s flexibility, his hard work and his pin-point passes make him a must too. A fit and in-form Joe Cole should also be there.
Wayne Rooney goes. End of story! Emile Heskey? Capello appears to believe he is a must. Peter Crouch? Get him on the plane, his record is unbelievable.
Jermain Defoe? Our impact sub? There’s no doubt that he has the talent but should he be there ahead of Gabby Agbonlahor and Carlton Cole? Probably.
But what happens if Michael Owen hits form? Would you still risk him given his injury problems in recent years?
So many questions! Have you got any answers? Feel free to comment…
