Hodgson for England
Friday, 30/04/2010
Roy Hodgson may not be named as manager of the season. He should be! And not just for taking his side to the Europa League Final.
The Fulham gaffer has done a tremendous job during his time in charge at Craven Cottage and proved what a great coach he is.
Hodgson won’t hit the headlines with outspoken criticism. He won’t make the front page or back page leads by crying out about problems either.
He just gets on with his job, and does an excellent job at that. Any of the players at Fulham will tell you what a great gaffer he is to work for.
Veteran skipper Danny Murphy has been around the block a few times and worked with many good managers – but he thanks Hodgson for giving his career a new lease of life.
And Bobby Zamora is another who should be thanking his boss. He’s a player with enormous talent but who hasn’t always had the best brought out of him by his managers.
Hodgson has kept faith with his frontman, helped him develop his all-round game and put him in the frame for England.
And it was Hodgson who turned non-league defender Chris Smalling into an England Under-21 star and got £14m from Man United for him, all within the space of a few months.
Hodgson for England? Why not? An English manager who has vast experience overseas, including the top jobs at Inter Milan, with Switzerland the United Arab Emirates and Finland.
Capello says he will stay after the World Cup. The FA should prepare just in case he doesn’t – and start sounding out Fulham about having their manager.

Most people like the idea of Roy Hodgson taking over as England manager. I fully understand why they like this idea. Not only is he good with tactics but he got a little club into the final of a european cup. The other good thing about Hodgson used the players and resources he has got a Fulham, he didnt splash out on big named signings this season. If you take it into account their main man Bobby Zamora was playing for Bath City, on loan form Bristol Rovers, 10 years ago. But my view on all this is if Roy Hodgson was to become England manager he would have a tougher job and would find it harder than he would have expected. But full credit goes to Roy Hodgson for getting Fulham to the final.

There’s some merit in Hodgson being touted as the next England boss, but hopefully not justified by the errant idea that the national team needs an Englishman at the helm. He’s a genuinely astute, quietly spoken master tactician. And he’s plied his trade successfully in Europe, the only other English manager succeeding in Europe I can think of is Steve McClaren ... ah! C’mon FC Twente.
Ed: The wally with the brolly is doing good in Holland - but his England chance has been and gone.
