United silence is not golden
Monday, 07/03/2011
Sir Alex Ferguson refused to speak to television and radio after Man United's crushing defeat at Liverpool. That smacks of bad sportsmanship - even though the decision to remain silent was taken before the game.
Sky and TalkSport didn't get their usual after match interviews and that is totally wrong from a fans' point of view.
Supporters pay cash to Sky to see games and watch interviews. Sky pays some of that cash to the Premier League and Man United benefit big time.
Likewise, TalkSport pay cash to cover games, money which goes to the clubs. They get the cash from advertising - which fans have to listen to as part of the deal when it comes to hearing commentaries.
The United boss hasn't spoken to the BBC for almost seven years since they reported on his then football agent son Jason. But his No.2, Mike Phelan, has usually handled those interviews. Not this time.
Not speaking to the press like this is in contravention of the Premier League rules. So why hasn't any action been taken? Or if action has been taken - such as fines - why haven't the league revealed what they have done?
Fergie is fighting an FA charge for comments he made after the defeat at Stamford Bridge. He's been in trouble before over remarks concerning referees.
Ok, so if referees are a problem - and we can all sympathise with that view at various times - why doesn't he just stick to talking about his players, the match, or the opposition?
Man United fans deserve better from a manager that they all worship. Come on Sir Alex, we know you are a great boss and we want to hear your comments!
