Well done Torres

Well done Torres

Wednesday, 04/08/2010

Fernando Torres says he is ready to stay at Liverpool. Until August 31 we won’t know if that really is the case when the transfer window slams shut

But let’s hope that the Spain striker means what he says. Ok, if you are a Man City or Chelsea fan you would probably prefer to have heard Nando say he is ready to leave.

But other true football fans should welcome the hitman’s stance. If it’s true, it shows that there is still some loyalty in the game.

Torres has always claimed that Liverpool is the one club he wanted to join after leaving Atletico Madrid. He’s always been a great pains to stress that Anfield is his second home and he loves the people of Liverpool.

Ignoring approaches from the Premier League champions and possible mega-money offers from Man City would certainly back his claims.

He’s also always said that Steven Gerrard is another major reason he loves playing in front of The Koop. Stevie G says he is staying (did we really expect anything else?), Jamie Carragher is still there and now Joe Cole has joined the squad’s ranks.

There is also no doubt that Roy Hodgson has made Torres see sense. Rafa Benitez did win silverware with Liverpool and there’s no doubt he is a good manager but in recent years he appears to have reached his limit at Liverpool.

Liverpool fans now know they have a good backbone in Reina, Gerrard, Cole and Torres on which to build. Hodgson did wonders at Fulham – what can he achieve at a bigger club?

Liverpool supporters will now be hoping that the planned takeover happens fast and that funds are made available for new players.

Liverpool must still win their first Premier League. And they need to do it before rivals Man United clock up one more title success!
