Who should be captain?
Monday, 14/03/2011
John Terry could once again lead out England next week for their games against Ghana and Wales.
With Rio Ferdinand injured and Steven Gerrard also ruled out, boss Fabio Capello has hinted that the Chelsea skipper could be back in the frame.
Last time out JT's pal Frank Lampard was given the armband for the Three Lions match against Denmark and should he not get it again this time he will be gutted.
But if England are to progress we need firm decisions - and definitely no back tracking.
JT lost the captain's armband - rightly or wrongly - for off the pitch happenings in his private life. It doesn't really matter what you think of that, he lost the chance to lead his country.
Capello should stick to that decision otherwise the belief we had in the manager as being a hard man, a man of principles, goes out of the window.
But - and perphaps much more important - is that England need a new leader from the younger players coming through the ranks.
There are no obvious born leaders in the same mould as JT in the current squad - other than his fellow senior professionals.
So look down the list for someone who is going to be a regular, doesn't get injured too often and who could be looked upon as a player determined to succeed.
Found him? Yes... Wayne Rooney! He was put in the frame before and looking at the current squad he is the obvious candidate for the job.
I am not even 100 per cent sure the Roonster is the right man. But he could well be the right man, right now...
