2 defenders Arsenal should sign in January

Arsenal fought back from 1-0 down to beat Preston away on Saturday to clinch their place in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Gunners came close to a shock third round exit in the competition, but goals from Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud eliminated their Championship opposition.

It means that Arsene Wenger’s side are now in the hat for Monday night’s fourth round draw.

Arsenal will now to turn their attentions back to the Premier League. They face an away trip to Swansea City on Saturday, looking to return the top four of the league. If they can beat the Swans and other teams’ results favour the Gunners, Arsenal will return to the Champions League places.

They have struggled recently in the league, having only won two of their last five league matches. They have conceded eight times in their last six league games so some new defensive recruits may be required in January in order to both challenge for the title and Champions League qualification for next season.

Shoot! looks at two defenders Arsenal should sign in this month’s transfer window.

Ricardo Rodriguez

Wolfsburg’s left back Ricardo Rodriguez has been highly regarded as one of the best in the world in recent seasons.

Arsenal have a strong back four and good cover in all positions, but their left back offering is the weakest area of their defence.

He is a quick and physical defender, exactly the style required to suit Wenger’s side. Rodriguez also has an eye for goal, as he is very capable of scoring free-kicks and long shots.

He has already kept six clean sheets in his 15 Bundesliga appearances this season. Despite only being 24-years-old, Rodriguez has also made 45 caps for his native Switzerland.

Bacary Sagna

The former Gunners’ full back could be persuaded to return to The Emirates by ex-gaffer Wenger.

The current Manchester City right back’s contract expires in the summer meaning he will currently be without a club at the end of this season.

Arsenal currently have three right backs in their squad, however Carl Jenkinson and Mathieu Debuchy don’t seem to have much of a future in north London.

Sagna would be able to be purchased at a cheap rate, so could Wenger re-acquire his former defender as an experienced cover defender?
