2 January signings that will make Manchester United’s season

Manchester United picked up a sixth successive Premier League victory after overcoming West Ham 2-0 in a controversial encounter at the London Stadium on Monday.

The Hammers saw Sofiane Feghouli harshly sent off after just 15 minutes, and United took full advantage with goals from substitute Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic sealing the three points for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Ibrahimovic looked to be offside when he struck his 13th of the season late on, but nothing was given and United recorded an 11th victory of the campaign.

It now means that Mourinho’s side have won six league games on the bounce for the first time since 2014, and they find themselves just a point behind fifth place Tottenham ahead of Spurs’ clash with Chelsea on Wednesday.

United now have an FA Cup third round encounter with Reading to look forward to on Saturday, as the defending champions welcome back defender Jaap Stam to Old Trafford, the current boss of the Royals.

A New Year also means that the transfer window has reopened, and managers up and down the country will be looking at what deals they need to do to keep their side competitive in the second half of the season.

Mourinho will be no different, so here are TWO players who will make United’s season should they come through the door this month…

Jose Gimenez

Despite recent good performances from Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, many still feel that United need another centre-back, especially given that Eric Bailly is on African Cup of Nations duty for the rest of the month.

Thus, Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez should be near the top of Mourinho’s wish-list this month.

The 21-year-old has made just three league starts for Diego Simeone’s side this season, despite being a big part of the team that finished third in La Liga, and reached the Champions League final.

The Uruguayan international has struggled to depose Diego Godin and Stefan Savic from the backline, and thus could look to move on in January.

Reports back in November suggested that Mourinho was looking to bring the defender to Old Trafford and, given that his playing time hasn’t increased since then, it’s a deal the Portuguese boss should certainly try and complete this month.

Isco

Isco’s future at Real Madrid has been discussed for several months now, but it could be resolved over the course of the next few weeks.

The 24-year-old has started just eight of their 15 La Liga matches this season, albeit has started their last three, yet doesn’t look like nailing down a regular spot in Zinedine Zidane’s starting eleven.

Thus, the Spanish international may be on the lookout for another club and, based on recent reports, he could end up moving to the Premier League.

And it’s United who should seriously consider bringing him to Old Trafford, as he’ll certainly bolster their central midfield options given that he can play in the slightly deeper role as well as the more advanced central role.

With Michael Carrick 35 and Wayne Rooney 31, Mourinho may be looking at a long-term solution to the midfield area – Isco could be his man.
