2 players Man City must start in every game if they are to close the gap on Chelsea

Manchester City moved up to third in the Premier League on Sunday courtesy of a last-gasp 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Swansea.

Pep Guardiola’s side looked set to be frustrated by the Swans when Gylfi Sigurdsson cancelled out Gabriel Jesus’ first half opener, but the Brazilian international popped up in the last minute to secure a vital three points for the Citizens.

City took advantage of defeats to both Liverpool and Arsenal on Saturday to move back into the top four, but they remain ten points adrift of Chelsea with just 14 league games to go.

Yet, back-to-back league victories and just one league defeat in 2017 suggests that Guardiola’s men are going in the right direction, and if they can put a run of form together over the coming weeks, they could start to put a bit of pressure on Antonio Conte’s Blues.

City clearly have the players to go on a long winning streak, and here are TWO that should start every game between now and May to help City close the gap on leaders Chelsea…

Leroy Sane

Manchester City’s recent upturn in form has come since Guardiola started implementing a front four full of pace, dynamism, and trickery, of which Leroy Sane is an integral part.

The 21-year-old moved to the Etihad Stadium last summer after impressing at German side Schalke, yet it has taken him time to adapt to the English game, and indeed show many around the country why City splashed out £40 million on him six months ago.

However, the German international has certainly found his feet in recent weeks, scoring in back-to-back games against Tottenham and Crystal Palace, before playing a pivotal role in their wins over West Ham and Swansea in the last week.

Sane possesses the pace and confidence to take defenders on and get crosses into the box, and gave Swansea much to think about at the Etihad last weekend.

He’s still quite raw and occasionally makes the wrong decision, but further time on the pitch over the coming weeks will make him an invaluable member of this team for the remainder of the season and beyond.

Gabriel Jesus

Let’s not get too carried away, but Brazilian international Gabriel Jesus has the potential to become a top-quality striker in years to come.

The 19-year-old, who officially signed for City last month, has scored three goals in his last two Premier League games for the club, including both in their vital 2-1 victory over Swansea on Sunday.

However, it has been the nature of Jesus’ performances that have excited the City fans, and indeed restricted star striker Sergio Aguero to a place on the bench.

The Brazilian is deceptively strong on the ball, while his link-up play with the likes of Sane and Raheem Sterling looks promising ahead of the rest of the season.

Not only that, but Jesus knows exactly where the goal is, with his first against Swansea showing excellent reactions to pounce, before the winner came from his first header testing Lukas Fabianski, and him again responding first to bundle him the rebound.

The signs are good that City have unearthed a gem and one that, while he’s in form, is enjoying his football, and scoring goals, should lead the line for weeks to come.
