Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge at Manchester United hasn’t quite got off to the best of starts.

The former Chelsea boss, who was sacked at Stamford Bridge last December, has overseen just four Premier League wins from their opening nine matches, leaving them seventh in the table.

Their 4-0 hammering at Chelsea on Sunday made it one victory in six for Mourinho’s men, and leaves them five points adrift of leaders Manchester City at the top of the division.

The Red Devils face their neighbours in the League Cup on Wednesday, and could really do with a win over Pep Guardiola’s side to get them back on track after a tricky few weeks.

Unsurprisingly, there has already been much speculation about who Mourinho may try and bring in during the January transfer window in a bid to resurrect United’s title challenge.

Here are TWO players United fans can get excited about in January…

Romelu Lukaku

United have been keeping a close eye on Everton forward Romelu Lukaku this season, and they won’t have been disappointed with what they’ve seen.

The Belgian international has scored six goals in his last six Premier League games, including a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Sunderland last month. Add to that three goals in two games for Belgium, and the 23-year-old is one of the most in-form forwards in Europe.

He knows the Premier League, having scored 60 league goals in his last four seasons in the top-flight, and continues to improve his all-round game, such that he is one of the best forwards in the division.

United have only managed 13 goals this season, fewer than the sides in the top four, but getting a deal done for Lukaku in January would go some way to addressing that issue.

Antoine Griezmann

Another player who United have been heavily linked to in recent months, French international Antoine Griezmann could well leave Atletico Madrid in January.

The 25-year-old parted company with his agent in September and, with question marks surrounding the long-term future of manager Diego Simeone at the Spanish club, someone who Griezmann greatly admires, the French forward may feel that it is time to move on.

His friendship with Paul Pogba could encourage a deal with United for a player who has scored 57 goals for Atletico in the last two seasons at the club.

Mourinho will likely have to fend off Europe-wide interest for the forward, but Griezmann is certainly a player that United should break the bank for.
