3 England stars that need to secure a move in January

With just a few more days left of 2016, attentions are already turning to the opening of the transfer window on January 1.

While several managers up and down the country will already be thinking about who they might try and sign and who they may let go, one boss doesn’t have any of those worries – Gareth Southgate.

The England manager, appointed as Sam Allardyce’s permanent successor after a short spell in temporary charge in November, will instead be looking ahead to England’s next few games, where they face World Champions Germany in Dortmund on March 22 before a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley four days later.

The Three Lions are top of their qualifying group having picked up three wins from their opening four games, the latest of which was a 3-0 success over Scotland at Wembley in November.

Nonetheless, Southgate will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on whether any of his England players decide to make a move in the window, and here are THREE that should consider just that for the benefit of their careers…

Eric Dier

Eric Dier has appeared 25 times for Tottenham so far this season, but in only five of those has he played the position that he does for England.

The 22-year-old has been drafted in as a centre-back for much of the campaign due to the injury to Toby Alderweireld and, with Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele ahead of him in the defensive midfield pecking order, playing in defence seems to be his best bet at present.

However, once Alderweireld returns to full fitness, he’ll go straight into the centre of defence alongside Jan Vertonghen, which leaves Dier out of favour in both positions on the pitch.

Dier has been excellent for England in the defensive midfield position, but it’s difficult to see how he can get into the Spurs eleven if everyone is fit.

He has been loosely linked with a move away in January in a bid to play more regularly and, for the sake of his England future, it might be something he seriously considers next month.

Ross Barkley

Everton’s Ross Barkley hasn’t made an England squad since the European Championships in the summer, with his form for the Toffees simply not good enough to earn a recall.

The 23-year-old has been criticised by many, including his manager Ronald Koeman, for not doing enough when he’s on the pitch, and this has subsequently seen him dropped from a few games this season.

A return of two goals and two assists in 16 games isn’t enough from a player of his quality, so he may need a fresh start in January to reach his undoubted potential.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the young midfielder and, based on how well Mauricio Pochettino has got the likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane, and Danny Rose playing, Barkley should seriously consider his future at Goodison Park.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has never really nailed down a regular place in the Arsenal starting eleven, and he may now be beginning to consider his future at the Emirates.

The 23-year-old has never appeared more than 25 times in a Premier League season for the Gunners since moving there in 2011, yet this season is his most prolific goal-scoring one to date, having netted six times for the club in all competitions.

And, with five assists as well, he is clearly an important member of Arsene Wenger’s squad, but Oxlade-Chamberlain missed out on Southgate’s last England squad back in November, and also missed out on Sam Allardyce’s one and only squad in September.

He needs to be playing more regularly than he is and, with speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool, he may consider leaving Arsenal in January.
