3 forwards Man City should look to sign in January

Pep Guardiola’s first season in English football got off to the perfect start, but the last few weeks haven’t quite been as good for the Spaniard.

City won their first ten competitive matches under the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona, including a 2-1 win at neighbours Manchester United in September.

However, Guardiola’s side haven’t won any of their last six games in all competitions, a run which was stretched by their 1-0 defeat to Jose Mourinho’s United in the League Cup on Wednesday.

They lost 2-0 at Tottenham at the start of the month, their first defeat in the Premier League, and they were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Guardiola’s former employers Barcelona in the Champions League last week.

Nevertheless, City still sit top of the Premier League, albeit on goal difference from Arsenal and Liverpool, and they still have a decent chance of qualifying from their Champions League group, which includes Borussia Monchengladbach and Celtic as well as Barcelona.

However, Guardiola may feel that he needs reinforcements to keep his side top of the league, and may look to bring in another forward to add some more firepower to his squad.

Here are THREE he could look to bring in during the January transfer window…

Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez’s incredible form for Arsenal this season has not gone unnoticed from those around the Premier League.

The Chilean has scored six goals and laid on three assists in 12 games this season for the Gunners, and has adapted excellently to the more advanced central role that Arsene Wenger has deployed him in so far.

However, the 27-year-old has yet to sign a new deal at Arsenal this season and, although his current one doesn’t run out until 2018, he has not extended his stay at the Emirates just yet.

It is believed that Sanchez wants to see what ambitions the Gunners have before agreeing to stay in North London, but any delay could give City an opportunity to sway the forward’s mind.

If he hasn’t signed a new deal by the New Year, City may well test Arsenal’s resolve in the transfer window.

Edinson Cavani

City have repeatedly been linked with a move for Edinson Cavani in the past, when he was at Napoli and at current club Paris Saint-Germain, yet no deal was ever materialised.

The Uruguayan’s class is evident. He has scored at least 25 goals in each of the last six seasons – three at Napoli and three at PSG – and already has 13 goals in 12 appearances so far in this campaign.

Although he isn’t exactly what Guardiola is looking for in a forward, Cavani would provide City with another option upfront and, with speculation building about Sergio Aguero’s future at the club, he could be what City need in the second half of the season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been one of the most in-form players in world football over the past few seasons.

The Borussia Dortmund forward scored 36 goals for the German side last season, including two hat-tricks and six braces for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

And he has transferred that form into this campaign.

The Gabon international has ten goals in 12 appearances already this season, including eight goals in his last eight games for Dortmund.

Unsurprisingly, the 27-year-old is attracting interest from a number of top European sides, and Guardiola has reportedly been given the green light to spend big on the attacker.

If he can get him in, it would be a massive coup for the Manchester side.
