Jose Mourinho has endured an indifferent start to his reign as Manchester United manager.

The Red Devils won their first three league games under the former Chelsea boss, but have since then recorded just one win in six, which was a 4-1 triumph over champions Leicester on September 24.

During that run, they have lost to neighbours Manchester City and Mourinho’s former employers Chelsea, leaving them seventh in the table and already six points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s City at the top.

Nevertheless, United beat their neighbours 1-0 in the League Cup last 16 on Wednesday night, with Juan Mata netting the winning goal, and that could spark a decent run of form for Mourinho and his United team.

Unsurprisingly, United’s sluggish first few months of the season has increased speculation about who they may look to sign in the January transfer window, and one area Mourinho could look at is his striking options.

The Red Devils have scored just 13 goals in the league this season, four of which from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but they all came in the first four games of the campaign.

Thus, here are THREE forwards Mourinho could look to sign in January…

Romelu Lukaku

There continues to be a lot of speculation regarding the future of Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, who continues to be one of the most in-form forwards in the Premier League.

The Belgian international already has nine goals for club and country this season, including a hat-trick in Everton’s 3-0 win away at Sunderland last month.

The 23-year-old also netted the crucial goal in their 1-1 draws against both Crystal Palace and Manchester City, but continues to impress with his all-round game, which is nightmare for defenders to play against.

Lukaku, who has scored 66 Premier League goals in his career, has reportedly been scouted by United this season and, with him sharing the same agent as a few United stars, he could be convinced to move to Old Trafford in January.

Mauro Icardi

Mauro Icardi has done little to endear himself to Inter Milan fans in recent weeks.

The club’s captain criticised a section of fans in his autobiography, stating that he could have the Ultras ‘killed on the spot’.

Unsurprisingly, this hasn’t gone down well with sections of the Inter faithful, with some of them cheering when the forward missed a penalty against in their 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari last week, and some wanting him stripped of the captaincy.

Although the 23-year-old remains a starter at the San Siro and continues to score goals – he netted a brace in their 2-1 win over Torino on Wednesday – this fall-out could instigate a move away from Italy in January.

Icardi has moved to put the incident behind him, but some fans might not concur, which may put the striker’s future at the club in doubt.

United showed an interest in signing him in the summer and, although he signed a new deal at the San Siro in the summer, Mourinho could use the last few weeks to his advantage and make a move for the 23-year-old.

Antoine Griezmann

This could be a transfer that rumbles on for some time but, with increased interest in Antoine Griezmann in recent weeks, United may need to act fast to get their man.

The La Liga Player of the Year is in demand after parting company with his agent in September, alongside the fact that Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone’s future at the club remains in doubt.

This all comes after one of Griezmann’s best seasons in Spain.

The Frenchman scored 32 times in 54 appearances for the Spanish side last season, and then helped inspire his country to the final of the European Championships in the summer by netting six times in the competition.

French champions Paris Saint-Germain have entered the race in the last few days, which could force Mourinho to move for the forward in January.
