3 huge EFL clashes to keep an eye on this evening

Fulham will move into the top six of the Championship this evening should they beat Blackburn Rovers at Craven Cottage.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s men trail sixth place Sheffield Wednesday by just six points after a run of five wins and two draws in their last seven matches, including an excellent 3-1 victory at leaders Newcastle United on Saturday.

It means that they finally have the chance to leapfrog Carlos Carvalhal’s Owls, but Blackburn have been in decent form over recent weeks since the appointment of Tony Mowbray, who has yet to lose any of his five league games in charge of the club.

The Championship’s other game this evening sees Dean Smith’s Brentford host struggling Wolves, with the visitors looking to put daylight between themselves and the bottom three following their win over Rotherham on Saturday.

In League One tonight, leaders Sheffield United visit relegation-threatened Swindon Town at the County Ground, while there is a hugely-anticipated encounter at Kingsmeadow as AFC Wimbledon host MK Dons.

And in League Two, Doncaster Rovers could go seven points clear at the top with victory over Notts County, although second place Plymouth Argyle will hope to keep the pressure on the leaders by beating play-off hopefuls Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

So, in what should be a fascinating evening of EFL action, here are THREE games in particular that you should keep an eye on tonight…

Carlisle United v Luton Town

It’s fifth versus sixth in League Two this evening as out-of-form Carlisle United host Nathan Jones’ Luton Town at Brunton Park.

The home side have lost their last four league games, conceding nine goals in that time, which has seen them slip from third place and five points clear of fourth on February 18, to fifth and four points adrift of Portsmouth in the final automatic promotion spot.

It means that this evening’s clash against the Hatters takes on even greater significance as Keith Curle’s men are only six points clear of eighth place Mansfield Town, and defeat tonight would also see Luton leapfrog the Cumbrians in the table.

Jones’ side also lost their last league match, although it’s no disgrace to lose to Stevenage in the form they are in, but before then they had lost just one of their ten league games, winning five.

The Hatters are clearly tricky to beat, and in the form Carlisle are in, the visitors will certainly fancy their chances this evening.

AFC Wimbledon v MK Dons

It was the clash AFC Wimbledon fans would have been looking forward to when the fixtures were released last June, and finally it is here.

Neal Ardley’s men host Robbie Nielson’s MK Dons for the first time this evening since Wimbledon FC were allowed to relocate to Milton Keynes in 2002, and AFC Wimbledon was formed by the many supporters who were disappointed and angry at the decision.

And tonight will be the first time MK Dons visit Kingsmeadow, and although neither side are playing for anything in particular this term, Ardley’s men currently hold a three-point lead over Nielson’s side, and would certainly love to finish above them in the division this season.

AFC Wimbledon have won two of their last four but lost at home to Northampton Town on Saturday, while MK Dons have won just one of their last seven, and could only muster a 2-2 draw against out-of-form Rochdale on Saturday.

Nonetheless, it should be quite the occasion at Kingsmeadow this evening.

Fulham v Blackburn Rovers

Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham will look to break into the Championship’s top six with victory over a resurgent Blackburn this evening.

The Cottagers are just two points adrift of sixth place Sheffield Wednesday going into tonight’s clash at Craven Cottage, after a run of form which has seen them win five of their last seven league matches, drawing the other two.

It gives them the opportunity to break into the top six with victory tonight, but Blackburn have been in fine form since the arrival of Tony Mowbray on February 22.

Rovers have won two and drawn the other three of their five league matches since his appointment, and although it hasn’t moved them out of the bottom three, they are now level on points with 21st place Bristol City, and just three points adrift of 18th place Burton Albion.

Nonetheless, with just two away wins all season, it’s going to be a tough ask for Mowbray’s men this evening against a Fulham side that have lost just one of their last 12 home league games.
