3 huge EFL games to keep an eye on over the coming days

FA Cup excursions last weekend means that there are five Championship games and a whole host of League One and League Two matches over the next few days.

Huddersfield Town, currently third in the second tier, return to league action this evening after their 0-0 draw with Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday, and they’ll hope to take the confidence they gained from that clash into their encounter with fourth place Reading tonight.

Play-off chasers Derby County host relegation-threatened Burton Albion at the iPro Stadium this evening, while the team occupying the final play-off spot, Sheffield Wednesday, will look for a fifth straight victory against Brentford tonight.

In League One, FA Cup giant-killers Millwall, who have beaten Bournemouth, Watford, and now Leicester in the competition, host Chesterfield at the Den, while the team above the Lions in the table, Southend United, visit another play-off hopeful in the form of Peterborough United this evening.

In League Two, ninth place Wycombe Wanderers, who of course pushed Tottenham incredibly close in the fourth round of the FA Cup a few weeks ago, travel to 11th place Colchester United, while Newport County, currently bottom of the EFL and in dire need of points, host 15th place Morecambe this evening.

So, with several clashes up and down the country over the coming days, here are THREE huge matches you should keep an eye on this midweek…

Huddersfield Town vs Reading

It’s third versus fourth in the Championship this evening as David Wagner’s Huddersfield entertain Jaap Stam’s Reading at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The hosts drew 0-0 at home to Premier League title contenders Manchester City on Saturday in what was a committed and spirited display from the Terriers, and their recent form will give them great confidence ahead of their clash with the Royals.

Wagner’s men have won their last five Championship games, two of which were at home to Brighton and Leeds, and have lost just one of their last 13 league matches, which was away at Sheffield Wednesday on January 14.

However, they come up against another promotion hopeful in Reading, who have had an excellent season under Dutchman Stam in his first managerial job.

The Royals are unbeaten in their last six Championship matches, winning four, and beat Huddersfield 1-0 back in September in the reverse fixture at the Madejski Stadium.

With seven away wins in the league this term, Stam’s men will be confident of going to West Yorkshire and getting all three points, but Wagner’s side will have something to say about that in what should be an intriguing encounter at the John Smith’s Stadium tonight.

Peterborough United vs Southend United

With just four matches in League One this midweek, this evening represents an excellent chance for either Peterborough or Southend to throw themselves right into the play-off picture.

Phil Brown’s Shrimpers are currently in sixth and three points ahead of tonight’s opponents, and given that they have lost just twice in the league since October, they’ll be supremely confident of going to London Road and clinching all three points.

And when you consider Posh’s recent form, it’s difficult to see past a Southend win tonight.

Grant McCann’s men have lost five of their last eight League One matches, although did win their last home game against Shrewsbury Town last week.

Nonetheless, Peterborough are right in play-off contention, sitting ninth and just three points behind Southend in sixth, so the hosts cannot afford to drop points to Brown’s side this evening.

Thus, it is all set up to be a fascinating evening at London Road.

Bristol City vs Fulham

Wednesday night sees a clash in the Championship which could have repercussions at both ends of the table.

Lee Johnson’s Bristol City are just a place and two points above the bottom three after a dreadful run which has seen them lose 12 of their last 16 league games, and thus sink from sixth on October 29 to fourth bottom.

However, there have been signs of improvement in recent games, given that they have won one and drawn two of their last four, and were slightly unfortunate to go down 2-1 at Leeds last time out.

Nonetheless, they’ll have their work cut out against Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham, who return to league action after a disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Cottagers are eighth in the Championship and nine points behind the play-off places, but they do have a game in hand on sixth place Sheffield Wednesday, and two on Leeds in fifth.

And, having won three of their last four league matches, they’ll be confident of getting another three points at Ashton Gate on Wednesday.

Clearly, it’s a match both sides really need to win in a bid to meet their expected aims come the end of the season.
