3 Man United players Mourinho should drop ahead of their Europa League clash

Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United slipped to eighth in the Premier League on Saturday as they could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

Despite recording a Premier League record 37 shots against the Clarets, United were woeful in front of goal and, when they did hit the target, they found goalkeeper Tom Heaton in excellent form.

The result means that Mourinho’s men trail the league leaders Manchester City by eight points, and he will know that they need to end this run of just one win in seven league matches as soon as possible if they want to challenge for the title.

However, United’s attention turns to the Europa League this week, where they travel to Fenerbahce looking to back up their impressive 4-1 win over the Turkish side a fortnight ago with victory on Thursday.

Mourinho’s side are level on points with Feyenoord at the top of Group A, but victory in Turkey would give them a great chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.

However, given United’s recent form, Mourinho may look to make a few changes to his side on Thursday, so here are THREE players he may drop in Turkey this week…

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

It’s just not happening for Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the moment.

The Swedish international has not scored for Mourinho’s side since the 1-0 win over Zorya at the end of September, and has netted just twice in his last 12 United appearances.

It’s a far cry away from the man who scored four in his first three United matches at the start of the season, but he was particularly wasteful in front of goal against Burnley on Saturday, as United drew a blank against the newly-promoted side.

Thus, Mourinho may decide to rest his number one forward ahead of the trip to Swansea on Sunday.

Marcos Rojo

Although Marcos Rojo has deputised well in the absence of Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling, if the latter is fit, he should get the nod on Thursday.

With Bailly out injured for a while, Mourinho needs a settled centre-back partnership and, although Rojo has performed well in recent games, he is prone to one too many errors.

Smalling is a better defender than Rojo and, although the English international was far from his best against Chelsea, minutes on the pitch alongside Daley Blind can only help United form a solid and dependable backline.

Jesse Lingard

Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial should get an opportunity against Fenerbahce, especially given their performance against the Turkish side a fortnight ago, which means Jesse Lingard may have to make way.

The English international has netted twice this season but, with Juan Mata doing well and Mourinho likely to stand by Paul Pogba, it might be time for Lingard to drop to the bench.

Nevertheless, it could do him good in preparation for the trip to Swansea on Sunday, but it also gives Mourinho an option off the bench against Fenerbahce if needed.
