3 massive January deals Manchester United missed out on

Manchester United could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to Hull City on Wednesday night to hinder their chances of making the Premier League’s top four.

Jose Mourinho’s men won six straight games at the end of 2016 to get themselves back into contention, but three successive draws has seen them lose ground on the top four, and indeed dent their hopes of returning to the Champions League next season.

Mourinho’s men travel to champions Leicester on Sunday hoping to get a much-needed victory which could put them to within a point of fourth place Liverpool.

The Red Devils have won 11 of their 23 league games this term, but nine draws, the most alongside Middlesbrough, could be their undoing come May.

United’s struggles back in October and November prompted many to believe that Mourinho needed to strengthen his squad to reel in the top four, and potentially get themselves back into title contention.

However, there were no incomings at Old Trafford last month, despite several quality players being linked with a move to Old Trafford, so here are THREE massive signings they missed out on in the winter window…

Victor Lindelof

This was a deal that was in the balance for much of January, but United weren’t able to bring Benfica defender Victor Lindelof to Old Trafford before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline.

The Swedish international has started all but one of their 19 Primeira Liga games this season, helping them to the top of division having won 14 of those matches.

Lindelof, who is an accomplished centre-back and right-back, was repeatedly linked with a move to United throughout the window, and recent reports suggest that the club held talks with Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira on deadline day about sealing a deal for the 22-year-old.

However, it looks now like United will have to wait until the summer to get their man.

Isco

Isco’s Real Madrid future looked set to be resolved in January, although no new deal has been signed or transfer secured for the Spaniard.

The 24-year-old midfielder has been on the peripheries of the first team for much of the season, starting just nine of 19 La Liga games this term, as well as playing just 67 minutes of Champions League football thus far.

The Spanish international, who many will remember changed the game for his country to help them come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with England last November, is a quality player who should be playing more regularly, which is why the likes of Tottenham and Man United were reportedly interested in the playmaker.

However, neither side were able to get a deal completed last month, yet expect the interest to intensify come the summer should Isco see first team chances remain restricted in the coming months.

Antoine Griezmann

This was another deal that was regularly speculated upon over the past few months, but United didn’t sign Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann last month.

The French international scored 32 goals in just 54 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side last term, and then backed that up with six goals to help his country reach the European Championships final last summer.

Euro 2016’s top-scorer then parted company with his agent in September, and speculation has been rife ever since about his next move, with United repeatedly linked with the 25-year-old.

His relationship with Paul Pogba may help Mourinho get a deal done for Griezmann, who came third to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the Ballon d’Or awards last month, yet he’ll have to wait until the summer to try and bring the talented forward to Old Trafford.
