3 midfielders Everton should look to sign in January

Ronald Koeman’s Everton got back to winning ways courtesy of a comfortable 2-0 win over West Ham on Sunday.

Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley secured the Toffees their first win in four Premier League matches, in turn recording their fifth league victory of the season.

After an excellent start to Koeman’s tenure – the Dutchman took over from Roberto Martinez in the summer – in which they won four of their first five league games, the Toffees went five matches without a win in all competitions prior to Sunday’s victory.

Nevertheless, that 2-0 success at Goodison Park means that Koeman’s men remain sixth in the table, but have reduced the gap to fifth place Tottenham to just two points.

However, Everton’s recent run of form has increased speculation about who Koeman could look to sign when the transfer window reopens in January, so that his side can keep pace with the top five or six in pursuit of European football.

Thus, here are THREE midfielders the Dutchman may look to sign in the New Year…

Rachid Ghezzal

A player Everton were heavily linked with during the summer, Rachid Ghezzal could be subject to further interest from the Toffees in January.

This is because the Algerian international has not played as much as he was expecting at Lyon, starting just three of their 11 Ligue 1 games so far this season, albeit the last two.

And, with little assurances about his place in the side, the 24-year-old may reconsider Everton should they come in for him again in January.

With Ghezzal’s contract up at the end of the season, he is sure to attract interest, so Koeman must act fast if he wants to secure his signature.

Kevin Strootman

Kevin Strootman has struggled with persistent injuries over the last few years, but he is beginning to get back to full fitness and playing well again at Italian side Roma.

The 26-year-old suffered a knee injury in 2014, one which kept him out for eight months, and then another knee problem three months later at the start of 2015, which kept him out for a further seven months.

However, prior to those injuries, Strootman was very highly-rated and was linked with a move to Manchester United, and it looks like he is rediscovering that form once again.

Strootman has appeared in nine of Roma’s 11 Serie A matches, and scored two goals, one of which coming in their Europa League match against Astra Giurgiu, who were West Ham’s conquerors.

Koeman may weigh up a move for the Dutch international in January.

Steven N’Zonzi

Steven N’Zonzi could be making a return to the Premier League, just a year on from leaving Stoke City.

The Frenchman moved to Sevilla last year and went on to help the Spanish side win the Europa League last season. He appeared 47 times for them last time around, including 29 La Liga matches, to help the club finish seventh in the Spanish top-flight alongside their Europa League triumph.

However, Everton appear willing to pay his £20 million release clause in a bid to bring him to Goodison Park, and he’d be a great addition to the squad if he recreates the same form we saw at Stoke in previous years.
