3 midfielders Manchester City should look to sign in January

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City got back to winnings ways in the Premier League by thumping West Brom 4-0 on Saturday.

Sergio Aguero, whose future at City has been called into question after he was left out of the starting eleven versus Barcelona two weeks ago, netted a brace as did the excellent Ilkay Gundogan in a dominant performance at the Hawthorns.

Guardiola’s men had failed to win any of their previous six matches prior to the West Brom win, which included a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham and a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Guardiola’s former employers Barcelona.

However, their impressive victory in the Midlands on Saturday means that City retain their place at the top of the Premier League ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool, both of whom also won convincingly at the weekend.

Nevertheless, City’s disappointing run of form has increased speculation about who Guardiola might add to his squad when the transfer window reopens in January, so that they are capable of competing on both the domestic and European stage.

So, here are THREE midfielders City may look to sign in January…

Ante Coric

Croatian international Ante Coric is a little-known midfielder making a big name for himself in his homeland.

The 19-year-old broke into the Dinamo Zagreb first team at the end of the 2013/14 season, and has since been a regular feature for the Croatian champions, appearing 74 times in the last two campaigns.

An impressive start to the new season, which includes the winner in their 1-0 win over HK Inter on Saturday, has put many top English clubs on alert, including Guardiola’s Manchester City.

With Liverpool also thought to be interested, it’s only a matter of time before Coric moves to a top side, and City should get in there first, as the young Croat has the potential to be one of the world’s best midfielders.

Thorgan Hazard

A player Chelsea let go last year after no appearances at Stamford Bridge, Thorgan Hazard has improved to be a key midfielder in the Borussia Monchengladbach side.

The Belgian, brother of Chelsea star Eden, made a permanent move to Germany in 2015 after a fruitful loan spell with the club earlier that season.

Unsurprisingly, he has gone on to much greater things at Monchengladbach, and has already netted seven goals in nine games for the club this season as his form begins to pick up again.

It is reported that Chelsea have a £13 million buy-back option in the youngster’s contract but, given what City have provided for Kevin De Bruyne, another Chelsea star who struggled at the Bridge but flourished elsewhere, Hazard could be a potential signing for Guardiola in January.

James Rodriguez

James Rodriguez’s Real Madrid future is far from certain.

The Colombian captain made a big-money move to the Bernabeu off the back of an incredible World Cup campaign in 2014, and started his career in the Spanish capital with 17 goals in his first season.

Since then though, he has struggled to have the same impact, and has scored just nine goals in 41 appearances for Zinedine Zidane’s side over the last 18 months.

With no La Liga appearance since September 21, the 25-year-old may seek a move elsewhere in a bid to resume his career as, at the age of 25, he should be entering the peak of his career.

City would certainly benefit from a fully-firing Rodriguez, and should consider a January move for the midfielder.
