3 midfielders West Ham should look to sign in January

Slaven Bilic led West Ham to a seventh-place finish in last season’s Premier League but, based on what’s happened so far this time around, it doesn’t look like the Hammers will be replicating that finish.

Bilic’s men currently sit 16th in the Premier League following a 2-0 defeat at Everton on Sunday, their sixth defeat of the campaign.

This disappointing result at Goodison Park succeeded a fruitful spell for the Hammers, who beat Crystal Palace and Sunderland in the league before overcoming Chelsea in the League Cup last week.

Their tally of ten points from ten matches sees them just three points clear of the bottom three, although that could become two if Swansea win at Stoke on Monday night.

Unsurprisingly, West Ham’s early season woes have led to increased speculation about who Bilic may look to sign in the January transfer window as he attempts to move his side away from the relegation zone.

Thus, here are THREE midfielders who could look to bring in during the January window…

Robert Snodgrass

With Hull City falling down the Premier League table at a fast rate, West Ham could to pluck one of their prized assets in January.

Robert Snodgrass is the Tigers’ top-scorer so far this season, with his four goals in their opening six matches helping Mike Phelan’s side make a solid start to the new campaign.

However, six straight defeats has plummeted the Yorkshire side into the bottom three, and Bilic could use that to his advantage in January by going in for Scottish international Snodgrass.

Hull would be unwilling to sell, but Snodgrass may be tempted by the move as Bilic looks to strengthen his midfield options.

Kerim Frei

A player linked with a move to the London Stadium earlier in the season, Turkish international Kerim Frei remains on Bilic’s radar.

The 22-year-old has struggled to get a regular first team spot at Besiktas since his £3 million move there in 2013, and has made almost three times as many substitute appearances as he has starts.

However, the young midfielder played under Bilic when he managed the Turkish outfit, so the West Ham manager knows what he is going to get from Frei, who has appeared just three times so far this season.

A January move could be in the offing.

Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas’ lack of first team opportunities at Chelsea will no doubt alert many clubs going into the January window.

The Spanish international has made just one Premier League start under new boss Antonio Conte this season, with the Italian less than impressed when he did start against Arsenal by substituting him after just 55 minutes.

A brace in the Blues’ League Cup triumph at Premier League champions Leicester looked to have resurrected a flailing Chelsea career, but the disappointing display at Arsenal has somewhat put pay to that, as he has yet to appear for the Blues since that 3-0 loss on September 24 (albeit injury has also contributed to that spell away from the first team).

West Ham have already been linked with a move for Fabregas in the January window and, given how influential he was for Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, it’s clear that he can still do a job in English football.
