3 nailed on signs that Arsene Wenger is leaving Arsenal this summer

Arsenal exited the Champions League at the last 16 stage for the seventh successive season on Tuesday night following a 10-2 aggregate hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich.

The Gunners had it all to do going into the second leg at the Emirates, having lost 5-1 at the Allianz Arena just three weeks ago, but Theo Walcott’s 16th goal of the season gave them a glimmer of hope in what was a promising first half.

However, Laurent Koscielny’s debatable red card eight minutes into the second half completely changed the game, as from then on Bayern were clinical and Arsenal were hopeless, with Robert Lewandowski netting the resulting spot-kick, and then further goals from Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa, and two from Arturo Vidal adding to Arsenal’s misery.

Unsurprisingly, the result has been met with outrage from Arsenal fans, and Wenger’s future as manager is once again hot topic up and down the country after a seventh successive last 16 exit, and their chances of playing in the Champions League next term hanging in the balance given that they are fifth in the Premier League.

Wenger has yet to sign a new deal at the Emirates, and with just a few months to go until the end of the campaign, here are THREE signs that he won’t be Arsenal manager next season…

Yet to commit to anything

As of yet, Wenger has not made any decision regarding his future, despite the end of the campaign being just two months away.

And while it’s not unusual for the Frenchman to leave a contract until the end of the season, this is arguably the first time in a while that there are genuine doubts about whether he is going to sign, and it’s that indecision which could be causing more harm than it’s doing good.

The Gunners boss has reportedly been offered a two-year contract to remain as manager, yet that new deal appears to have been on the table for some time.

Nonetheless, Wenger hasn’t pledged his future to the club and, with more questions asked about his future following their 10-2 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, and further vague answers from the 67-year-old, it all points to his Arsenal tenure coming to an end this season.

He has taken them as far as they can

One of the biggest signs that Wenger won’t be Arsenal manager next season have been the performances on the pitch.

Despite the Gunners finishing second in the Premier League last season, they seem to be getting further and further away from the top, and their defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League demonstrates the widening gap between themselves and Europe’s elite.

However, it seems that that gap has been getting bigger for the past few seasons now, and Wenger hasn’t been able to halt that, be it by bringing in a world-class defensive midfielder, having a plan B against the top teams, or preventing second half capitulations when the captain goes off the pitch.

Arguably, Wenger has taken Arsenal as far as he can, and you sense that with his legacy in line for potential ruin, he could decide that enough is enough come May.

Things are unravelling fast

With Alexis Sanchez reportedly involved in a training ground bust-up, both Sanchez and Mesut Ozil yet to sign new long-term deals at the club, five defeats in seven and embarrassed in the Champions League, things appear to be unravelling at the Emirates.

And it doesn’t look like Wenger seems able to stop it happening.

The results on the pitch appear to reflect the bad vibes coming out of the club at the moment, and as much as Wenger is putting on a brave face at press conferences and interviews, the fans are getting increasingly restless, and the results and performances aren’t regularly where they need to be.

So, if Arsenal is in Wenger’s best interests, he will surely know that the best thing to do this summer is step aside.
