3 players unfortunate to miss out on Southgate’s latest England squad

England interim manager Gareth Southgate named a 25-man squad on Sunday for their upcoming matches against Scotland and Spain, and it’s a squad which has divided opinion among many fans.

Bournemouth’s Jack Wilshere and Tottenham’s Harry Kane have returned to the fold, despite the former managing his first 90 minutes in over two years against Spurs just two weeks ago.

Kane made his return to first team action yesterday, just under two months since his last start, but did net the all-important equaliser as Tottenham drew 1-1 at Arsenal in the North London derby.

Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana missed out on Southgate’s first squad through injury but have earned recalls after the Reds’ stunning recent form, and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling also returns to the squad.

An injury to Dele Alli and a seemingly unfit Chris Smalling means they both miss out, but the former’s omission hasn’t opened the door for Everton’s Ross Barkley, who remains out of favour with the national team. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also misses out despite a decent few weeks for Arsenal.

Nevertheless, there are some Englishmen that will be frustrated to have missed out on selection this time around, and here are THREE that were unfortunate not to get a call-up…

Jordan Pickford

Although England have three decent goalkeepers in the squad, Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford can count himself unlucky not to get a senior call-up.

The shot-stopper has been in fine form for David Moyes’ struggling Black Cats this season and, although they are bottom of the Premier League and have conceded 21 goals, that tally could have been significantly higher were it not for Pickford.

The youngster helped inspire Sunderland to their first league win of the season at Bournemouth on Saturday, making several important saves to keep his side in the game.

He is almost certainly England’s future number one goalkeeper, so it would be hugely beneficial for him to experience as much of the senior team environment now, so the step up to being number one is less daunting in the future.

Nathan Redmond

Southampton’s Nathan Redmond has been in great form since his move to the South Coast in the summer, and is revelling in the faith placed in him by new manager Claude Puel.

The 22-year-old made a big-money move to St Mary’s in June, and there was a bit of pressure on his shoulders after several good showings for former club Norwich, and indeed numerous caps for the England Under-21 side.

However, Redmond has lived up to the billing so far and, in the more advanced role alongside fellow Englishman Charlie Austin, he has started the season particularly well.

When you look down the 25-man squad, there are some players less deserving of a place than the omitted Redmond.

Charlie Austin

Another Southampton player who has been extremely hard done-by, Charlie Austin must be wondering what more he can do to get into the squad.

The 27-year-old has netted five times in the Premier League this season, which is one less than Jermain Defoe, and the same as West Ham’s Michail Antonio (both of whom are also very unfortunate not to make the squad).

Of the 25 men in the squad, only Theo Walcott has scored at least five times in the league this season, while the four strikers in the squad, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy, and Daniel Sturridge, have found the net eight times between them in the Premier League.

Austin’s form has been excellent for Southampton this season, and it’s staggering that he hasn’t been rewarded with a call-up.
