3 potential upsets in the fourth round of the FA Cup this weekend

The FA Cup returns this weekend, with 32 teams vying for a spot in the fifth round of the world’s oldest club competition.

Holders Manchester United made it through to round four after thumping Reading 4-0 at Old Trafford, and they’ll entertain another Championship side in the form of Wigan Athletic, the 2013 FA Cup winners, on Sunday.

Premier League leaders Chelsea host Brentford in a West London derby, while 12-times winners Arsenal travel to League Cup finalists Southampton on Saturday evening, with the Saints fresh from knocking Liverpool out of the competition on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are still in the FA Cup though – they’ll face Wolves on Saturday, while the non-league duo of Lincoln City and Sutton United both host Championship opposition, with Lincoln at home to Brighton on Saturday, and Sutton hosting 1972 winners Leeds on Sunday.

In what should be an enthralling weekend of cup action, we’ve looked at the fixtures and highlighted THREE potential upsets from this weekend’s fourth round games…

Derby County v Leicester City

The first game of the fourth round weekend sees Championship side Derby take on Premier League champions Leicester, and this one has certainly got the look of an upset.

Steve McClaren’s Rams are seventh in the second tier having won 12 of their 27 league games this term, but their form since McClaren returned to the club in October has been extraordinary.

Derby were 20th when the former Newcastle boss took over on October 12, but since then they have picked up 33 points from 16 matches, having won ten and drawn three of those games.

Add in the fact that they haven’t lost any of their last nine games at the iPro, and Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes will have their work cut out on Friday night, especially because their recent form has been poor.

The league champions have won just two of their last eight games in all competitions and, despite winning 2-1 at Everton in round three, that is their only domestic away victory this season, having lost eight and drawn three of their 11 Premier League away outings.

Back-to-back 3-0 defeats is hardly ideal preparation going into an East Midlands derby, and you can bet that Derby will be well up for knocking the Premier League champions out of the FA Cup on Friday.

Liverpool v Wolves

A long-shot perhaps, but Wolves will be delighted that they are playing Liverpool now and not at any other time of the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s men suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday to exit the competition, and when you factor in that they’ve won just one of seven matches in 2017, they are really struggling at present.

Their only victory of the New Year was an unconvincing 1-0 success away at Plymouth in a third round replay, and they’ve not managed to win any of their last three games at Anfield, with Argyle forcing a replay, Swansea taking all three points in the Premier League, and Southampton knocking them out of the League cup.

Thus, with Klopp expected to make changes ahead of a crunch match with Chelsea on Tuesday, Paul Lambert’s Wolves will fancy their chances of a major upset.

They were unbeaten in 2017 until a 3-1 defeat at Norwich last weekend, yet Lambert knows that his side can mix it with Premier League opposition, given that they knocked Stoke out in round three.

Anfield could be the place to witness a cupset this weekend.

Sutton United v Leeds United

They couldn’t, could they?

National League side Sutton United knocked League One outfit AFC Wimbledon out of the competition in the last round, winning 3-1 at Kingsmeadow in the replay, and they’ll certainly hope that they can use some of the cup’s magic against Leeds on Sunday.

Paul Doswell’s side held the Dons to a 0-0 draw at home in the first match, but the visit of Garry Monk’s Leeds, the 1972 FA Cup winners, is sure to bring the best out of Sutton.

Form would suggest that this is only going one way.

Sutton have only won one of their last four league games, and just three of their seven matches in 2017, while Monk’s Leeds beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Elland Road on Wednesday to record their fourth win in five matches.

These two met at this stage of the competition 47 years ago when Don Revie’s Leeds thumped Sutton 6-0 – how Sutton would love to exercise some revenge and use of the magic of the cup to reach the last 16 this weekend!
