3 reasons why Leicester can continue the fairytale by beating Atletico this evening

Premier League champions Leicester City will look to book their place in the last four of the Champions League when they host Atletico Madrid this evening (7.45pm kick-off).

Craig Shakespeare’s side only lost 1-0 in the Spanish capital last week following an Antoine Griezmann penalty in the first half, and although Diego Simeone’s men dominated for large periods, they only had the one goal to show for it.

As such, the Foxes are very much still in the tie ahead of tonight’s return leg, and they’ll look to their efforts in the last round as inspiration in their quest to keep the fairytale going this evening.

Leicester lost 2-1 in the first leg of their last 16 clash against Sevilla, but produced a stunning display to win 2-0 at the King Power Stadium in the return leg, thus booking their place in the last eight and in turn becoming the sole English representative left in the Champions League.

They’ve done it once, they can do it again, and here are THREE reasons why Shakespeare’s side will indeed get the job done this evening, and take a step closer to Champions League glory…

Stunning home European form

For all of Leicester’s struggles this season, their home form, certainly in Europe, has been outstanding.

The Foxes won all three of their group stage matches at the King Power Stadium, beating FC Porto and FC Copenhagen 1-0, and indeed Club Brugge 2-1.

Yet their most impressive result and performance came in the previous round, where Shakespeare’s men lost 2-1 in the first leg away at Sevilla, only to produce a stunning display to win 2-0 at the King Power, and thus progress to the last eight.

They’ve come from behind against a La Liga heavyweight once in this competition already, there’s no reason why they can’t do it again tonight!

Resurgent under new boss Shakespeare

Many lambasted Leicester’s decision to sack title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri back in February, yet their form under new boss Shakespeare has suggested that it was the right decision.

The Foxes had just lost 2-1 in Sevilla in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, were knocked out of the FA Cup four days earlier at the hands of League One side Millwall, and were fourth bottom in the Premier League table when Ranieri lost his job.

Yet they are now 12th in the table having picked up 16 points in just seven league games, and of course overturned that narrow deficit against Sevilla to book their place in the last eight of the Champions League.

All in all, they are a different side to the one that lost 2-0 at Swansea on February 12 to fall to 17th in the table, and as such Shakespeare deserves enormous credit for turning things around at the King Power Stadium, and making them look more like the side that won the league last term.

And it’s form that gives them a real chance against Atletico this evening.

They’re Leicester!

As if you thought that Leicester cannot continue to defy the odds anymore, they have reached the last eight of the Champions League, and are the only English representative left in Europe’s elite competition.

What they did last season was simply extraordinary, and likely won’t be repeated again, and although their league form this term hasn’t been great, they have continued the fairytale in Europe.

The way they minimised the damage in Sevilla to then win at home was excellent, and they did a similar job in the Spanish capital last week, losing just 1-0 to Atletico.

As aforementioned, Leicester have done it once already in the competition this term, they can do it again – they’re Leicester after all!
