Second place Liverpool host third place Manchester City as they look to record a fourth successive win in what will be their final game of 2016.

Jurgen Klopp’s side came from behind to beat Stoke 4-1 at Anfield on Boxing Day, and the Reds will be hoping to keep up their excellent record at home when Pep Guardiola’s side visit this evening.

Liverpool haven’t lost at Anfield in the Premier League since January 17, and since then have won ten of their 16 matches, which includes the 3-0 success over City back in March.

However, they come up against a City side that are steadily improving under Guardiola, and they also will seek a fourth consecutive win at Anfield this evening.

The Citizens left it late to see off Hull 3-0 on Boxing Day, and alongside a 2-1 victory over Arsenal just before Christmas, they will be confident of ending a 13-year wait for a league win at Anfield.

In what is likely to be a fascinating encounter at Anfield, here are THREE reasons why Liverpool will secure the three points this evening…

Home advantage

Liverpool haven’t lost a Premier League game at Anfield since Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United secured a 1-0 win back in January this year.

Since then, the Reds have won ten and drawn six league matches at home, which includes the 3-0 victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s City back in March.

Six wins and two draws this season has continued that excellent run of form at the redeveloped Anfield, and it still remains an incredibly difficult place for an away team to go and win.

City know that better than any side in the top-flight, as they haven’t tasted success at Anfield since 2003 when a Nicolas Anelka brace clinched a 2-1 win for Kevin Keegan’s side.

Since then, they have lost nine and drawn four of their 13 games, including their last three visits to Liverpool in the league.

Even in Philippe Coutinho’s absence, Liverpool are still firing on all cylinders going forward.

The Reds have netted 15 times in the six games succeeding the Brazilian’s injury against Sunderland, with Adam Lallana and Divock Origi both netting four times, as well as two for Sadio Mane.

Roberto Firmino looked back to his best in the 4-1 triumph over Stoke on Tuesday, while Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to net his first league goal of the campaign, and will be pushing to start against his former club on Saturday.

Klopp has an array of options to choose from, and all of them will be looking forward to testing themselves against a vulnerable City backline, who have conceded just one goal less than Liverpool thus far.

Nicolas Otamendi can sometimes be ill-disciplined and Aleksandar Kolarov clearly lacks pace, so expect Liverpool to get at them right from the off on Saturday.

Great record versus the top sides

Liverpool’s record against the top sides in the country will fill them with great confidence ahead of Saturday’s encounter.

They have won two and drawn two of their four games against the current top six this season, with wins at Arsenal and Chelsea intertwined with draws at Tottenham and against Manchester United.

Add in last season’s efforts after Klopp took charge, and it makes even better reading.

Klopp oversaw eight games against the aforementioned five teams, winning three and drawing four of them, with their only blot the 1-0 defeat to United back in January.

That means that, since taking over at Anfield, Klopp has lost just one of 12 matches against the top sides, and Liverpool are now seen as a side for the big occasion.

They beat City both home and away last season, scoring seven goals in the process, and they’ll hope to keep up their good record against both the Citizens and the top sides on New Year’s Eve.
