3 reasons why Manchester City can still catch Premier League leaders Chelsea

Manchester City picked up their second successive Premier League victory last weekend to just about keep their title hopes alive.

Pep Guardiola’s men followed up their 4-0 thumping of West Ham last week with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Swansea on Sunday, with a Gabriel Jesus brace enough to see off Paul Clement’s side.

City were certainly made to work for it though, with Gylfi Sigurdsson equalising for the Swans nine minutes from time, but Brazilian international Jesus netted an injury-time winner to secure the three points.

It means that Guardiola’s side remain ten points behind league leaders Chelsea, who beat Arsenal 3-1 on Saturday, yet that it now just two defeats in nine for City, who will still harbour hopes of regaining the Premier League title.

It’s certainly going to be a tough ask for Guardiola’s men, but they’ve shown some very good signs in recent weeks which could stand them in good stead over the final 14 games of the season.

Thus, here are THREE reasons why Man City can still catch Premier League leaders Chelsea…

Fallen upon working formation

The last few games has seen Guardiola employ a system that has City playing freely and offensively, while also maintaining a decent shape at the back.

With Gabriel Jesus as his main man up top, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have been acting as either wingers or as part of a front three, while the creatively brilliant David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne have been playing more centrally, with Yaya Toure pulling the strings just behind.

Their first half display against Swansea was excellent, with the likes of Sterling and Sane looking dangerous every time they took a defender on and got wide, while Jesus was a menace upfront with his strength and agility.

Sane looks a different player to the one that struggled in his early City days, while De Bruyne and Silva are starting to make telling contributions, something De Bruyne failed to do over the festive period, and Silva back in November.

It’s clearly a system that the players enjoy playing, and one that could see City brush aside many teams between now and May.

Frightening front three

Guardiola first played the front three of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, and Gabriel Jesus in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace, and their work as a frontline was frighteningly good.

They battered Palace 3-0 and then followed that up with an even more impressive dismantling of an in-form West Ham last week, with once again the front three causing all sorts of problems.

Jesus gives them a focal point to work around, given that he is strong and can hold defenders off, as well as retaining the ball under pressure and looking for the runners wide of him, while Sane and Sterling have the pace and trickery to get into great positions down the flanks, and indeed in the box.

It is still very early days in their partnership, and their tailing off as games go on will be of concern to Guardiola, but when these three have been on it, they have been frighteningly good, and many defences will struggle to contain them when they are on their game.

Goals everywhere

The biggest concern many people have with Manchester City is that they don’t get the necessary goals when they’re on top.

They dominated Tottenham in the first half back on January 21, but didn’t get their rewards until Hugo Lloris made two unusual errors, and the same can be said of the Swansea game at the weekend, where they got the early goal but weren’t ruthless enough to finish the game off.

However, with the attacking players they’ve got in the system they’re playing, it’s just a matter of time before the goals start flowing, even if Sergio Aguero isn’t in the team.

Jesus had made a fine start and will only get better the more he gets used to English football, while Sane is beginning to shine after his big-money move last summer.

The dismantling of West Ham last week is a sign of things to come, and if they can do that on a more regular basis, then they’ll keep the pressure on Chelsea from now until May.
