Manchester City could join neighbours Manchester United in the race for Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil.

The 28-year-old playmaker has yet to sign a new deal at the Emirates and, given that his current contract expires at the end of next season, several clubs will be on alert as Ozil potentially becomes available.

The German World Cup winner has been in scintillating form so far this season, and has netted seven times in 14 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side in their solid start to the campaign.

Consequently, Ozil may be expecting a much-improved deal to stay in North London but, as of yet, no deal has materialised, which has alerted the two Manchester clubs, who are reportedly keeping a close eye on Ozil’s situation.

City’s participation in the Champions League and their higher league position could give them the edge over United in the race for the 28-year-old, but United boss Jose Mourinho worked with the German at Real Madrid, which could sway Ozil’s mind.

Nevertheless, here are THREE reasons why Ozil should choose City over United…

Long-term project under Guardiola

Pep Guardiola is embarking on what looks like a long-term project at Manchester City, and that would enough to persuade any player to be a part of it.

You get the sense that he is going to be given time to implement his style and management techniques at the Etihad, while Mourinho’s recent shelf-life has been three years at a push.

City may not win anything this year under Guardiola, but it’d be hugely surprising if they relieved him of his duties. He signed a three-year deal, and is likely to at least see that out.

City are going through a period of rebuilding under their new boss and, come the end of the season, Ozil may see enough progress to want a move to the North West.

Champions League football

As it stands, Manchester City are looking considerably more likely to finish in the top four than Manchester United.

And this guarantee of Champions League football could sway Ozil’s mind.

Every player wants to play in Europe’s elite competition, it is the best club competition in world football and, for a player like Ozil who has yet to win the Champions League, he needs that guarantee of playing in it year in, year out.

Although it is only 11 games into the new season, City look more likely to do that.

More likely to win trophies

At the moment, you’d have to say that City are better than United and much more likely to win trophies.

Ozil has yet to win the Premier League since arriving in England, and has yet to taste Champions League success so far in his career. City look more likely to win those titles than United.

Their attacking options are excellent and, although they have a few issues defensively, they are already looking like a strong team in both the league and in Europe.

Two FA Cup winner’s medals is not reflective of the quality of player Ozil has been since moving to Arsenal and, if he is seeking major honours, City may be his best bet.
