Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho could be targeting a stunning move for Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil.

The 28-year-old midfielder has yet to sign a new contract at the Emirates and, given that his current deal runs out at the end of next season, speculation is building about his future in North London, with it seeming that the Gunners are struggling to offer him a significant pay rise.

Consequently, Mourinho’s United are reportedly keeping tabs on Ozil’s situation at Arsenal, and could launch a sensational move for the playmaker at the end of the season.

Ozil worked with the United manager at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, and could look to reunite with his old boss at Old Trafford if he does not want to sign a new deal at Arsenal.

However, Ozil’s situation could attract interest from a host of Premier League teams, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City also believed to be eyeing up a potential move.

With Ozil’s long-term future very much up in the air, here are THREE reasons why he should choose United over City…

He’d be the main man at Old Trafford

If you look at how Manchester United have played this season, they are still lacking that creative spark in the attacking areas, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney, and Juan Mata all struggling for consistency.

However, if Ozil came in, you’d build the team around him.

The German World Cup winner has proven in his time in England how important and influential he can be in games, and his form this season has somewhat backed up that claim.

Ozil is significantly better than all of United’s current attacking options, and he’d slot straight into the number ten role behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

With the pacey Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, or Jesse Lingard either side of him, Ozil could run the show, and could use their speed and trickery down the flanks to create several opportunities.

He would become the focal point of this United team.

Reunite with Jose Mourinho

Ozil spent three years at Real Madrid prior to moving to Arsenal, and all three of them were spent under current United manager Mourinho.

He was widely regarded as one of the best number ten’s in world football throughout his time in the Spanish capital, and it was a major surprise to the footballing world when he was allowed to leave for the Emirates.

Mourinho also highly rates the German, and spoke glowingly of his midfielder when in charge at the Bernabeu.

The two clearly like working together, and that relationship could be enough to see Ozil sign at Old Trafford.

Similar impact to Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie made the move to Manchester in 2012, and was widely seen as the reason why United regained the Premier League title the season after in what turned out to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s last in charge.

Ozil is the calibre of player that could have a similar impact.

Although he’s unlikely to replicate van Persie’s 26 goals that season, he’s more than capable contributing at least that many in goals and assists, especially if this season’s form is anything to go by.

He could go in there and be the one responsible for bringing the good times back to Old Trafford, and that could be enough to encourage many a player to make the move to Manchester.
