3 reasons why Tottenham will win the 2016/17 Premier League title

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham are the only unbeaten side left in the Premier League as we enter the November international break.

Spurs have won five and drawn six of their first 11 matches and, although they would have liked a few more victories, they have proved that they will be a tough side to beat this season.

Their 2-0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has been the highlight of the campaign so far, and they also picked up a deserved point away at North London rivals Arsenal last weekend.

However, it hasn’t gone well for them in the Champions League thus far, with Pochettino’s side in danger of getting knocked out in the group stages after winning just one of their first four games.

Nevertheless, Spurs have proved in the league that they could be up there challenging for the title again this season, and here are THREE reasons why they will go on and win the league in May…

Defensively excellent

Defensively, there aren’t many sides in the Premier League better than Tottenham.

Their tally of six goals conceded is easily the least of any side so far this season, with Chelsea the next best with nine.

And, when you look at the Spurs back five, you can see why.

Hugo Lloris is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, they’ve got two of the best centre-backs in the division, and they form arguably the best central defence partnership in the league.

Kevin Wimmer and Eric Dier are also more-than-able deputies and, despite Alderweireld’s injury, Spurs have retained their solidity at the back.

The first choice full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are also first choice for England, and there is some serious competition for that berth, and both have improved defensively in the last season or so.

Add in the excellent defensive midfielders Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama, and Spurs are going to be very tough to beat this season.

Hugely creative

Christian Eriksen was second only to Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in the assists table last season and, alongside the other creative options, Spurs should always carry an attacking threat.

England’s Dele Alli was outstanding last season, with his ten goals and nine assists integral to Spurs’ title challenge, while Erik Lamela also had an improved season, netting five times and laying on nine assists for his teammates.

Son Heung-min has started the season well, and with the full-backs Walker and Rose always looking to push forward and get crosses in, Spurs are going to create several chances per game, it’s just a case of putting them in the back of the net.

The main concern thus far will be the lack of goals they’ve scored, certainly in Harry Kane’s absence, but you sense that as soon as summer signing Vincent Janssen gets one from open-play, he’ll go on and net a few.

They can’t continuously rely on Kane to win them matches but, with the creative talent behind him, there should be more than enough goals in that team to take Spurs to the title.

Brilliant first XI

Having collated everything from the first two points, it shows that Tottenham’s first eleven is outstanding.

That back five is as good as any in the league and, while there are question marks about Liverpool and Manchester City’s defensive capabilities, there are none asked of Spurs’.

With Dembele, who was brilliant against Arsenal last weekend, and Wanyama, who has started his Spurs career impressively, sitting in front of them, it’s going to be a tall order for sides to break them down, hence their unbeaten start to the league season.

With a midfield trio of Eriksen, Alli, and then either Lamela or Son, they are all able to play in each position, and this unpredictability is something Spurs will need as the season progresses.

And, when Kane plays upfront, Spurs are always going to carry a goal threat.

This first team could rival any in the top-flight, and it could fire Spurs to the title this season.
