3 replacements for Walter Mazzarri at Watford

Premier League outfit Watford have today confirmed that they will part company with manager Walter Mazzarri following their game with Manchester City on Sunday.

The Hornets have once again beaten the drop in the Premier League by accumulating 40 points from their 37 matches, although a run of five straight defeats has been a disappointing end to an otherwise fine season at Vicarage Road.

However, it hasn’t been enough, for one reason or another, to keep 55-year-old Mazzarri in the job, a job he only took last summer following the departure of Quique Sanchez-Flores.

Former Napoli and Inter Milan manager Mazzarri has won 11 of his 37 league games in charge of the Hertfordshire-based side, but there have been reports of unrest in recent times, and that may well have been a factor in the Watford hierarchy’s decision to move on.

So, with Mazzarri on his way out of Vicarage Road, a Premier League job has come available for those many managers currently unemployed and looking for job, or indeed those in jobs but looking to move to the next level.

And here at Shoot! we have identified THREE ideal replacements for Mazzarri at Watford…

Slavisa Jokanovic

Slavisa Jokanovic won’t be managing Fulham in the Premier League next season after they lost out to Reading in the Championship play-off semi-finals on Tuesday, going down 2-1 to Jaap Stam’s men on aggregate.

However, could he make an incredible return to Watford and actually get the chance to manage them in the top-flight?

The 48-year-old was the man that took the Hornets to the promised land back in 2015, winning 21 of his 36 games in charge, but couldn’t agree a deal to manage the club in the top-flight, and subsequently left the club.

Nonetheless, the Watford hierarchy may look at the excellent rebuilding job he has done at Fulham, even if they didn’t get promoted, and consider him for the vacant managerial post at Vicarage Road.

Marco Silva

You sense that Hull boss Marco Silva is going to be in-demand this summer despite failing to keep the Tigers in the Premier League.

The 39-year-old took over with the club almost certain to be playing Championship football next season, given they were stuck in a rut and second-bottom in the table, but Silva gave them a chance of survival with six wins from their 17 games under his stewardship, although a 4-0 loss at Crystal Palace saw them lose that battle.

As a result, the Portuguese has earned himself many admirers in English football, and with his future at Hull unclear following their relegation, Watford may well consider the 39-year-old for their managerial role.

Claudio Ranieri

The majority of the footballing world felt for Claudio Ranieri when he was sacked as Leicester boss in February, although the Foxes’ upturn in form since then suggests that it was probably the right decision.

However, the Italian did guide the Midlands side to the most improbable of Premier League title successes last term, where else could Watford get a manager like that?

Ranieri is likely to want to stay in England given his efforts at Leicester, and Watford may well be able to offer him a route back into the game this summer.
