3 things Chelsea fans will take away from their FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham

Chelsea are through to the FA Cup final after beating London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 in a stunning semi final tie at Wembley on Saturday.

It is the first time the Blues have reached the final since they won the competition in 2012.

Willian bagged a brace for Antonio Conte’s side in the first half, scoring both a free kick and a penalty, although Tottenham’s Harry Kane did equalise for Spurs in between the Brazilian’s double.

Dele Alli’s goal shortly after the restart put the two sides level for the second time in the match following a stunning Christian Eriksen cross, only for substitute Eden Hazard to put Chelsea back in the lead 15 minutes from time.

The Belgian that set up Nemanja Matic, who secured the victory with a sublime strike from outside the penalty area.

The defeat for Spurs was their first loss since February’s 2-0 defeat against Liverpool.

Conte’s men now have the momentum going into the title race between the two London clubs following Saturday’s victory.

Shoot! looks at THREE things Chelsea fans learnt from the six-goal thriller at the home of English football…

Conte’s got his spark back

After some recent patchy results, the Italian manager has his side back to their best.

The Blues have lost twice already in April with defeats coming against both Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

But Saturday saw Conte back to his passionate and characteristic self.

He had the fans behind him for 90 minutes and the victory just summarised how much of a hero the Italian has become at Stamford Bridge.

Tactical genius

Many Chelsea fans were left surprised at 4:15pm when manager Conte announced the starting line-up, as star striker Diego Costa was left out of the eleven alongside Belgian winger Eden Hazard.

The duo have arguably been two of Chelsea’s best players this season, but the decision turned out to be a tactical masterstroke.

Willian started over Hazard and his first half brace proved to be vital for his side.

Hazard replaced Willian on the hour mark and Costa also came on for Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi, who was gifted a rare start in the Chelsea line-up. The duo made an immediate impact.

Not only did Hazard score the goal that put Chelsea back in the lead, but he also assisted Matic’s wonder-strike, proving why he is one of the hot favourites to win the PFA Player of the Season award for a second time.

It is not the first time Hazard has been specifically used as an impact substitute by the Blues, as during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Spurs in the league last season, Hazard was left on the bench at kick off.

Hazard was introduced at half time with his side 2-0 down and the Belgian also proved his capabilities to deliver in big matches by scoring the equaliser that famously won Leicester City the Premier League trophy last term.

Conte’s new approach clearly caught Spurs off guard and the tactical shuffle proved to be vital during Chelsea’s semi final triumph.

Ake a bow

After Gary Cahill was ruled out of the semi final through illness, Dutch defender Nathan Ake was called upon to take the reins at left-centre back.

Ake spent the first half of the season playing for AFC Bournemouth, but was recalled by the Blues in January as cover for defender Marcos Alonso.

However, since his return, Ake had only played twice for the Blues prior to the victory over Spurs, both of which came in previous rounds of the FA Cup against Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ake was fantastic during the six-goal thriller and he certainly staked his claim for future first team opportunities.

Based on his performance against Tottenham, Ake deserves to retain his place for Chelsea’s next match against Southampton on Tuesday.
