3 things Mauricio Pochettino must improve at Tottenham in January

Mauricio Pochettino has overseen an excellent start to the season at Tottenham, as they look to juggle Champions League demands with their quest for the Premier League title.

Spurs are the only unbeaten side left in the top-flight, having picked up five wins and two draws from their opening seven games, including an impressive 2-0 win over leaders Manchester City prior to the international break.

However, it hasn’t been all plain sailing for Pochettino’s side – they lost their first Champions League match at home to AS Monaco last month, although did bounce back by beating CSKA Moscow 1-0 a few weeks ago.

Champions League football and the various cup competitions are going to provide a stern test to the Tottenham squad this season, and manager Pochettino may look at reinforcing his side when the transfer window reopens in January.

Here are THREE things that SHOOT think the Argentine needs to improve at White Hart Lane in January…

Strength in depth up front

It’s a question that has been asked for a few years now and one that is still relevant today – how will Spurs cope without Harry Kane?

The Englishman has led the line superbly in the last few seasons, and won the Premier League Golden Boot last time out.

Kane is currently out injured, and Spurs produced a sensational performance against City without him, but you still feel that they may need that extra forward as the season goes on.

Vincent Janssen has yet to get going after his summer move to White Hart Lane and, although Son Heung-min is in great form, it’ll be difficult to maintain that throughout the season.

An additional forward could be what Spurs require to be successful on numerous fronts this season.

Midfield reinforcements

Tottenham’s strength in depth in the midfield is likely enviable to most teams in the division but, with European football this season, you can never have too many options.

It only takes an injury or bad run of form for Son, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela, or Christian Eriksen and Spurs might be struggling.

Reportedly, the North London club are leading the race for Real Madrid’s playmaker Isco, who might be considering his options due to a lack of first-team football at the Bernabeu.

His ability to play almost anywhere across the midfield can only help Spurs so, if they can get this deal done, it could be a great bit of business.

Develop young talent

Spurs have been excellent with developing young talent from the lower leagues in recent seasons, just look at the rise of Alli.

Unsurprisingly, manager Pochettino is looking to do that again, having been linked with Peterborough United winger Leo Da Silva Lopes in recent weeks.

The 17-year-old has propelled himself into the Posh first-team with a string of great performances, and Spurs may feel that he could follow the same path as Alli and become a regular at White Hart Lane.
