3 things we learned from Blackburn Rovers’ 1-1 draw with Cardiff City

Tony Mowbray’s unbeaten start as Blackburn Rovers’ head coach continued on Tuesday night after Derrick Williams’ last-minute equaliser secured a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City at a sparsely-populated Ewood Park.

Left-back Williams bundled home in stoppage-time to preserve a point for the hosts, who had previously gone behind to Kenneth Zohore’s volley seven minutes before the interval.

Rovers enjoyed early chances during the first half, with Charlie Mulgrew’s swinging free-kick turned aside by Allan McGregor, before Sam Gallagher swivelled to crash a volley against the crossbar.

Cardiff, who had efficiently dealt with the early pressure, came into the contest more, and Greg Halford glanced a header straight at Jason Steele. Zohore also looped a header off the top of the bar.

Neil Warnock’s team did take the lead after 38 minutes though on a cold night in East Lancashire courtesy of Zohore, who connected with Junior Hoilett’s cross from the right to thump beyond Steele into the roof of the net.

In the second half, Cardiff had to deal with a Blackburn onslaught.

Firstly, Ryan Nyambe stood up a cross which was met by Liam Feeney’s downward header, only for Jazz Richards to clear off the line.

Richards was on hand again to thwart substitute Danny Graham from tapping home Marvin Emnes’ pass shortly after.

In the closing stages, Blackburn threw everything at the South Wales outfit, and they were finally rewarded in the 90th minute when Williams controlled Connor Mahoney’s punt from the right to steer through a sea of players, and indeed goalkeeper McGregor.

Blackburn are 20th in the second tier, two points and two places above the relegation places with a trip to Norwich City awaiting them on Saturday, while Warnock’s Cardiff sit 13th ahead of their home clash with Birmingham City at the weekend.

So, here are THREE things we learned from Blackburn’s draw with Cardiff at Ewood Park…

The Mowbray revolution

Tony Mowbray has certainly turned things around at Ewood Park since he replaced Owen Coyle in the dugout last month.

Mowbray, aged 53, is unbeaten in his four games since taking over at the East Lancastrian side, following the gritty 1-1 draw with Cardiff City.

During that upturn in form, Blackburn have managed to climb out of the bottom three relegation places, securing vital home victories against Derby County and local relegation rivals, Wigan Athletic in the process.

Those wins could eventually prove vital in Rovers’ battle against relegation, Mowbray has brought discipline and belief to a team who had looked consigned to League One.

Zohore’s goalscoring run continues

Cardiff City’s leading light continued to impress for Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds.

Danish forward Kenneth Zohore has really found his shooting boots recently, netting seven times in his last eight outings.

Copenhagen-born Zohore signed a permanent deal in the Welsh capital last summer, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Cardiff from Odense BK.

On Tuesday night, the 23-year-old was a handful to Blackburn’s backline, and he took his goal with sublime technique, volleying brilliantly past Steele to complete a team move he had initially started.

Battling Blackburn’s fighting spirit

Under Mowbray’s stewardship, Blackburn have well and truly found their battling, fighting spirit, as they look to build upon their recent positive results.

The clash with Cardiff, under the floodlights of Ewood Park, was watched by a crowd of just over 10,000.

Yes, it wasn’t pretty, but those who attended witnessed Rovers deservedly claim a share of the spoils.

Rovers caused Cardiff issues throughout the second half, and Williams’ injury-time leveller could potentially be another turning point in Blackburn’s ever-changing battle to retain their Championship status.
