3 ways Tottenham can line up with Wilfried Zaha next season

Tottenham kept up the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 3-2 victory over in-form Everton at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men took advantage of the Blues playing on Monday night by cutting the gap to seven points, with a brace from forward Harry Kane and a strike from Dele Alli enough to see off Ronald Koeman’s side, who threatened a comeback through goals from Romelu Lukaku and Enner Valencia.

Nonetheless, it was a ninth straight home league win for Spurs, and one that keeps them second in the Premier League table, a point clear of Manchester City, and now six clear of Arsenal in fifth after they lost at Liverpool.

Despite a title to challenge for and an FA Cup trophy to go in search of, it appears that Spurs are already planning for next season, and at the weekend were once again linked with a move for Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

The Ivorian international scored a wonderful goal to help the Eagles beat West Brom on Saturday, and it is reported that Pochettino is a big fan of the 24-year-old, who could cost them £30 million in the summer.

This all begs the question, where will Zaha fit into the Spurs team?

Well, here are THREE ways Tottenham could line up with Zaha next season…

Midfield three with Alli and Eriksen (4-2-3-1)

The third place in the midfield three alongside Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen has been the one spot Spurs have struggled to fill this term, with Erik Lamela suffering from injury and Son Heung-min too inconsistent to be relied upon.

Thus, the most likely position for Zaha would be on the right side of the midfield three.

All three are flexible and would be able to swap positions during the game, which will cause defences countless issues, and while Eriksen is technically the best of the three, Zaha has the pace and trickery to exploit the opposing left-back.

It’s certainly a midfield three that would keep many a Premier League defence on their toes should Zaha make the move to White Hart Lane.

Front three with Alli and Kane (4-3-3/3-4-3)

Zaha has occasionally played in a more advanced role this season, and that could be a role he takes up at Tottenham alongside Kane and Alli.

The Nigerian international is deceptively strong and has incredible pace, so he’d be exactly the sort of player Kane could play off, or vice versa, as the England striker does sometimes drop slightly deeper to bring others into play.

It would mean that 24-year-old Zaha would still be able to get wide and get crosses into the box, but he’d also be expected to be in the box and finishing chances should he play in this role.

Nonetheless, it’s certainly a position he could find himself in at Spurs next season.

Just behind Kane alongside Alli (3-4-2-1)

Playing Zaha alongside Alli in an advanced midfield two just behind Kane would see him replace Eriksen in the current Spurs formation.

Pochettino lined up with the 3-4-2-1 system in the 3-2 victory over Everton, and his side were totally dominant for 70 minutes or so, continuously getting into good positions and creating goal-scoring opportunities.

However, it’s clear that Spurs are at their best when the full-backs, or indeed wing-backs, get forward and provide width, and this is something that Zaha would be able to do from the midfield position, as there’s more than enough protection in there in the form of Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele.

Playing in this position could give Zaha the licence to roam, and it’s this freedom that usually brings the best out of the attacker.
