5 things we learned from Chelsea v Manchester United

Chelsea will face Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, after beating defending champions Manchester United 1-0 in their heated quarter-final at Stamford Bridge.

N’Golo Kante’s second half strike was enough to knock Jose Mourinho’s side out of the competition.

United played the majority of the match with 10 men, after Ander Herrera was sent off midway through the first half for picking up two yellow cards.

It was the second time Mourinho has revisited Stamford Bridge since taking charge of Manchester United; both of which have ended in defeat for the Portuguese manager.

The hosts should’ve won more comfortably after a one sided second half.

The London derby semi-final between the Blues and Tottenham will take place on the weekend of the 22nd/23rd of April.

The victory for Antonio Conte’s side was their 13th consecutive victory at Stamford Bridge; having not lost there since September, where they were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool.

Shoot! looks at the five major talking points from Monday night’s clash at Stamford Bridge…

Que Sera Sera

The Blues are off to Wembley, aiming for their first FA Cup triumph since 2012.

They will face London rivals Tottenham in the last four of the competition, inside England’s home of football; Wembley.

Spurs’ form against Chelsea at Wembley hasn’t been fantastic in recent years; having lost against them in both of their meetings there in the last five years.

A win for Chelsea in the semi final will see them stand in good stead; as they aim for their third domestic Double in seven years.

The not so ‘special one’ anymore

Jose Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge on Monday; following two stints in charge of the Blues.

The self proclaimed ‘special one’ received a rather hostile reception from the home supporters; marking the end of Mourinho’s long-lasting love affair with the club.

Mourinho’s men put up a good fight during the match, but the 10 men of Manchester were unable to progress to the semi finals of the competition.

The Portuguese manager will be looking to pick up his first victory over his former side as Manchester United boss, when the two sides meet again in April.

The Bridge stands strong

The win for Chelsea was their 13th consecutive victory in all competitions at Stamford Bridge; a new club record.

The record previously stood at 12, which had been achieved in both the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons.

Conte’s side will be wanting to increase this run to 14 matches when they face Crystal Palace on the first of April.

Herrera’s early bath

The major turning point of the cup tie was Herrera’s red card in the first half.

The Spaniard was dismissed for a duo of fouls in quick succession on Chelsea forward Eden Hazard.

From that moment on, the hosts dominated the match and United were forced to defend mightily for the best part of an hour.

Kante- An angel to deny the ‘Devils’

Chelsea’s midfield maestro Kante was once again a shining light against Mourinho’s men.

Kante’s goal was only his second in a Chelsea shirt since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Leicester in the summer.

His other goal for the Blues came back in October; during their 4-0 demolition over the Red Devils.

Kante put in a man of the match performance on Monday and the home fans will have felt that the winning goal was the least that he deserved after his showing against United.

The Blues still have to play United at Old Trafford in the league in April. Will Kante make it three in three for his new side against the Reds?
