5 things we learned from Huddersfield Town v Port Vale

Huddersfield Town are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after a 4-0 win over their League One opposition Port Vale.

Jack Payne got a brace for Town, with his goals coming either side of half-time. Kasey Palmer and substitute Harry Bunn also scored in the second-half.

The win for Town was their first victory by two or more goals this season.

The defeat for Vale was the first time caretaker Manager Michael Brown has seen his side lose since taking over.

Young winger Isiah Brown made his debut for the hosts on his 20th birthday. Brown joined the Yorkshire side on on loan from Chelsea on Friday for the remainder of the campaign.

Huddersfield have already gone one better than their cup campaign of last season, after being eliminated in a third round replay at the hands of Reading.

David Wagner’s side now go into the fourth round draw which will commence on Monday evening.

Shoot! looks at the five major talking points from Huddersfield’s demolition of Port Vale…

Huddersfield’s run continues

David Wagner’s (Pictured) side have now extended their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions. They have not lost a game since their 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic back in November 2016.

They simply outclassed their lower league opposition and Town could have probably won by more than four.

Wagner praised his side for their performance on Saturday afternoon.

He said, “We scored four great goals and we created many more good opportunities.”

It was also a chance for Huddersfield to bring in both new and returning players to the side.

Wagner added, “We were able to give some players minutes like Joe Lolley and Izzy Brown.”

The win gives them more momentum going into their next league game against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday. Both Town and Wednesday are very much in the hunt to be in the play-offs.

If Wagner’s men can keep picking up results in the way they have been over Christmas, then they are almost guaranteed a spot in the play-offs come May.

Brown’s first taste of defeat

The defeat for the League One side ends caretaker manager Brown’s unbeaten run since the end of December.

Despite fielding a full strength side; Vale did not have much of the ball and struggled for the majority of the game.

Brown became caretaker manager after previous boss Bruno Ribeiro resigned on Boxing Day.

Port Vale are currently 15th in the League One table and they are only nine points clear of relegation.

Brown’s side will be hoping to bounce back with a good result in their next league fixture against Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday.

Brown’s birthday debut delight

Chelsea loanee Isaiah Brown made his debut during the match – an impressive one too.

Brown was celebrating his twentieth birthday on Saturday afternoon, and the home crowd at the John Smith’s Stadium joined the party.

The debutant was heavily involved in Payne’s first goal and within the first 35 minutes, Town fans already had a song for their new signing.

Manager Wagner praised Brown for his debut and said, “In my opinion he made a great debut and it was a great day for him.

“It was his birthday and he gave us a good debut on it.”

The Town manager explained how Brown had to prepare in such a short space of time, after only joining Huddersfield on Friday.

Wagner added, “We gave him a crash course in the last 36 hours about our identity and what he has to do against the ball and with the ball. I think he did very well.”

Izzy has already impressed both fans and staff at the club. If he can continue to perform at this standard, he may be able to help guide Town towards a guaranteed play-off spot come May.

Vale’s struggling strike force

Port Vale currently have only one recognised striker on their books. This is not helped by their insistence to play 4-4-2.

With former on-loan striker and top scorer for the season Alex Jones moving to Bradford City, veteran midfielder Jerome Thomas is being forced to play up front alongside Rigino Cicilia.

Jones had scored 10 of Vale’s 33 goals this season before departing, leaving the rest of the squad with a lack of goals to their name.

The visitors only managed one shot on goal all game, a volley from defender Kjell Knops, which rolled straight at Town ‘keeper Joel Coleman.

If Vale fail to sign a couple of new strikers in January, then they are essentially nominating themselves to be in a League One relegation battle.

Payne in the backside

Town midfielder Jack Payne’s brace summed up his glistening performance on Saturday afternoon.

Payne had only scored once all season prior to the 4-0 thrashing of Port Vale.

Both of his goals finished off well worked passing moves and Payne was involved in a lot of Town’s attacks for the duration of the match.

With a big Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough next Saturday, manager David Wagner will be hoping that he can produce another man of the match performance against Sheffield Wednesday.
