Rotherham United have been relegated from the Championship, after losing 1-0 at home to Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

Sone Aluko’s goal midway through the second-half secured the three points for the visitors, who have returned to the top six of the Championship table for the first time since September.

Paul Warne’s side mathematically cannot stay up in the Championship, with The Millers now 24 points adrift of safety with only 21 points left to play for.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham side are now a point clear of seventh-placed Sheffield Wednesday and The Cottagers also possess a far superior goal difference over their promotion chasing rivals.

Rotherham came close to securing at least a point from the match, with top goalscorer Danny Ward having a number of chances on goal throughout the match.

Shoot! looks at the five major talking points from Saturday’s events at the AESSEAL New York Stadium…

Rotherham relegated

Rotherham United’s interim manager Paul Warne.

The defeat for the Millers meant that they have been relegated to League One.

After a season full of disappointing results and numerous managerial changes, their inevitable exit from the second-tier of English football was confirmed by Aluko’s eighth goal of the season.

Paul Warne’s side have only managed to pick up one victory in 2017, summarising just how poor their results have been this campaign.

They are the first team in the top six divisions to have been officially relegated this season, ending their three-season stay in the Championship.

Fulham’s play-off push

Sone Aluko nets Fulham’s winning goal.

The victory for Jokanovic’s side has moved them into the play-off places for the first time in over six months.

It wasn’t the most convincing performance from Fulham on the day, but they got the result they needed in order to put themselves in serious contention for the play-off positions.

With only seven league games left to play, victory for The Whites on Saturday has completely opened up the promotion race.

Manager Jokanovic was happy to get the result in a tightly fought match.

He said, “It was a very tough game. I am pleased because I have missed some 1-0 wins, so to get the goal and then finish with a clean sheet is pleasing and it is important news for us.”

No certainties for Warne

The result for Rotherham interim manager Paul Warne has left his position at the club under threat.

Since taking charge of the club back in December, Warne has only picked up three victories from a possible 22 on offer.

With the club set to make an announcement on Wednesday, Warne insisted that he had no indication of where his future lies.

He admitted, “Today was my first day as a manger that I have been ridiculously nervous.

“It’s not an easy job and I don’t know if this job is for me. If I was given the honour of being given the full-time role, it will be very hard for me to turn it down.”

Misfiring Martin

On loan Fulham striker Chris Martin was unable to add to his international goalscoring form of midweek, after netting for his native Scotland in their 1-0 victory over Slovenia last Wednesday.

Martin had a number of chances that he could’ve scored during the match, including a glaring one-on-one opportunity midway through the second-half.

He was recalled to the starting line-up for The Cottagers, having not started in their 3-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His missed chances did not prove to cost his side in the end, with fellow team-mate Aluko getting the only goal of the match.

Rotherham eyeing permanent Morris move?

Fulham’s Kevin McDonald battles Rotherham’s Carlton Morris (Left).

The Millers’ on loan striker Carlton Morris made his first start for the club on Saturday.

The 21-year-old, who is currently on loan from Norwich City, was making his second Rotherham appearance against Fulham following his arrival in January.

Morris played the first 62 minutes of the match, before being replaced by Jamie Yates. Morris looked very energetic and promising during his time on the pitch. Manager Warne praised Morris’ performance after the game.

“I was pretty happy with him,” Warne said.

“He has not had much match practice and he has only really had training with us. He had 20 minutes against Queens Park Rangers where I thought he looked good.”

The interim boss feels that he would be able to develop Morris even more if he was to be signed permanently in the summer.

“If he was my project in the summer, I think I could make him a wealthy man,” he added.

“He holds the ball up well and you can see that he understands the game. I think he is the sort of player that we want.”
