Arsenal have completed the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.
The 23-year-old, who will represent Switzerland at this summer’s European Championships in France, boosts a Gunners midfield that is set to lose out-of-contract trio – Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini – in the close season.
Xhaka captained Monchengladbach to a fourth-placed finish in the Bundesliga this term, as well as helping them qualify for the Champions League for two successive years.
Wenger told Arsenal.com: “Granit Xhaka is an exciting young player, already with good Champions League and Bundesliga experience.
“We have been watching him for a long time now and he is a player who will add quality to our squad.”
Xhaka made 134 appearances for the German side following a move from Basel in 2012, scoring nine goals, and will link up with his new team-mates on July 1, depending on the Swiss national team’s progress at Euro 2016.
