Arsenal must snap up these 2 La Liga stars in January

Arsene Wenger is looking to end a 12-year wait for the Premier League title by leading his Arsenal side to the summit this season.

The Gunners haven’t won the title since Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ stormed to the top in 2004, and they haven’t really looked like dethroning the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea since then.

However, based on what we’ve seen so far, that could change this season.

Wenger’s men are fourth in the table having won seven of their opening 12 league games, with a 4-3 defeat at home to Liverpool on the opening weekend the only blemish on an otherwise excellent start.

However, it’s their 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions which will excite Arsenal fans as the season progresses, with it abundantly clear that this Gunners side is more difficult to beat than many that have gone before them.

They have already qualified for the Champions League, and know a positive result against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday will put them in a strong position to qualify as group winners.

A 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Saturday turned out to be a point gained given Arsenal’s indifferent performance, and it’s those battling and resilient qualities which could see the Gunners go all the way this season.

Nonetheless, some still feel that they need reinforcements if they are to get to the summit, so here are TWO La Liga players Wenger should try and snap up in January…

Jose Gimenez

Although Shkodran Mustafi has come in and done well for Arsenal since his move from Valencia in the summer, a few shaky displays in recent weeks suggests that Wenger may need more defensive cover.

The German has looked particularly sluggish against pace in the last few games, which seems to be a regular theme with Arsenal centre-backs, yet the quick and positionally aware Jose Gimenez could go some way to addressing that issue.

The Atletico Madrid defender has been out of favour under Diego Simeone this season, as he struggles to get the better of first choice centre-backs Diego Godin and Stefan Savic.

Nonetheless, Gimenez has proved in his time in the Spanish capital to be a solid defender and, although there have been a few disciplinary issues, he’d be a great addition to the Gunners back four.

Isco

With Manchester United, Manchester City, and North London rivals Tottenham interested in the seemingly out of favour Isco, Arsenal should also throw their hat into the ring as well.

The 24-year-old has made nine league appearances for Real Madrid this season, but proved for Spain the other night against England what a special talent he is, and how much it was being wasted on the bench at Madrid.

The Spanish international would get into several Premier League sides, and his quality both in the middle of the park and in the final third could seriously benefit an Arsenal team looking to be competitive on numerous fronts this season.

It would be a huge scalp if Wenger could strike a deal ahead of the aforementioned trio, and it would be a serious statement of intent from the Gunners in preparation for their title challenge.
