Arsenal are reportedly preparing an astonishing £42m raid for France international striker Alexandre Lacazette this summer, if they miss out on Argentina ace Gonzalo Higuain, according to Le Progres (via the Express).

The Premier League side, who face Liverpool during the opening weekend of the new 2016/17 English top-flight campaign on August 14, have been continually linked with a move for the Lyon forward.

The 25-year-old, who has 10 international caps for his country but failed to make France’s 23-man squad for EURO 2016 this summer, scored an impressive 23 goals and provided four assists in 44 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 outfit last season.

Lacazette, who won the French top-flight’s Golden Boot award during the 2014/15 term, is now understood to be Gunners boss Arsene Wenger’s ‘Plan B’ should the Londoners fail to lure Napoli star Higuain to the Emirates Stadium.

The report suggests that Arsenal are ready to launch an improved offer of £42m for the French forward, after already failing with a £33m bid earlier this summer.
