Arsenal sell goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa for initial £14.4million profit

Arteta wants to add to his Arsenal squad in the summer.

Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has completed his £16million move to Aston Villa.

The 28-year-old, who has signed a four-year deal, impressed for the Gunners during Bernd Leno’s injury absence after the restart, helping the club win the FA Cup and Community Shield.

However, with the reliable German now having returned, Mikel Arteta has opted to cash in on the Argentine.

The North London club signed Martinez from Independiente back in 2010 for around £1.6million, meaning they have landed an initial profit of £14.4million.

Martinez has made Arsenal a huge profit.

During his 10 years at the Emirates, the South American stopper had spells out on loan at six different clubs, including Reading, Wolves and Getafe.

Now having impressed between the sticks for Arsenal in recent months, the Villans have decided to give him a chance to continue that form at Villa Park, where he is expected to be first-choice.

Dean Smith lost Pepe Reina when his loan spell expired at the end of the season but still does have the injured Tom Heaton, Jed Steer,  Orjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic as goalkeeping options.
